Screwy Question - cable guide

Most of the ones I've run across were held in place with a
self-tapping sheet metal screw. That's what comes with the Shimano
guide, if I recall correctly.

If you can't find a bolt, or one short enough, I've used a couple of
small pieces of double stick tape to hold it in place. Once the cables
are on, it's pretty well held by their pressure. The tape just stops
the guide from falling off during maintenance, etc.

The bolt is the same size as goes in the eyelets on your fork ends and
rear dropouts. 3 mm or 4 mm diameter. Go to your local hardware
store and go to their bolt area and look through the little boxes of
metric bolts they have. Hopefully they will have an Allen head cap
screw. Do not use a sheet metal screw. The bottom bracket shell is
tapped for an official metric bolt.

Hi Bow, What Dan says about using 3M Double faced tape, will work
fine. Whether your Bottom Bracket Shell already has tapped threads, I
don't know, but generally, I believe they don't.

The current available Cable Guides from Campagnolo (Nylon, and Metal)
come with what appears to be self tapping machine screws. The blue
Torlon (Plastic) Guide from Shimano appears to have just a regular
sheet metal screw.

If you don't wish to go through the hassle of inserting a screw, the
double face tape will works great, and will also serve purpose of
sealing the hole, so no dirt/water can enter. (You could even seal the
tiny hole first with a little bit of Silicone RTV Sealant if you like
to doubly insure no chance of contamination can occur.)

The 3M tape can be easily found in the Auto Section of Wal-Mart for a
few bucks. Trial fit the Guide first to make sure it is in the proper
position, sits properly on Bottom Bracket Shell, and that the cables
will run thier routes to F+R Derailleurs properly without contacting
the frame anywhere. If you should decide to use a screw of some type,
make sure it is not too long. Mark

5 mm x .8 is the standard threading on fender and rack eyelets. Pretty
easy to find at hardware stores.

I know that I have had a bottom bracket where a 5 mm bolt didn't fit-
too small.

Hi Bow,

I just asked this question about two months ago. I bought a Colnago
Master X Lite, built it up and I could not find a screw to thread into
the bottom bracket shell. That was because the shell was not threaded.
I had to get a tap and die set, used a 5 mm tap and the screw for the
cable guide worked great. The other way is a kind of sheet metal
screw. It was worth it me to get the tap and die set, maybe you dont
need one.

The one on my Cannondale seems to be M4 - at least, it's too small for a
bottle cage bolt. I rummaged around in the toolbox and found something
that fitted.
