What you need is "The Waterfalls of Scotland", by Louis Stott, published by
Aberdeen University Press 1987. ISBN 0-08-032424-X

This will tell you all you could want to know, and more; Grid reference,
description, location map, even height and sometimes a colour photo.
Beautiful book for browsing through as well. Very well indexed. I've no
idea how available it is now, I picked up mine in a charity shop, (before
their prices went skyward!)

NN 337 087 Inversnaid Hotel waterfall on the eastbank of Loch Lomond
NN 324 184 a few hundred meters east of Bein Glas
NN 180 681 Steall waterfall in Glen Nevis
NN 174 689 Glen Nevis gorge. Well, more of a cascade actually.

Come to think of it. What is your goal ? Photography, painting,
soundrecording, taking a shower ? There are so many small and big waterfalls
that a lot of them don't even have names.
The best time of year ? When it's raining heavily. Except for climbing
frozen waterfalls of course :-)

Thanks for those, mostly photography more than anything else. I love
waterfalls (even I almost got drowned in one). I may do some sound
recording as well, to give a feel of the place.

The reason for time of year some waterfalls only show in winter (not
after rains bizarrely!) and so on.

It's mostly memorable ones that I am looking for.

Best waterfalls I've seen for a long time were at the west end of Loch A'an
in the Cairngorms (grid approx: 995,013), but this was after some rain the
previous few day.

It's a very lonely spot, and crossing the river in spate is difficult.

The Lake District has always struck me as being the best place for
waterfalls. Although Louis Stott's book mentioned elsewhere apparently lists
details of 750 in Scotland, Scotland is a huge area so the Lakes must have
more per square mile.

Most mountain burns will have small falls that you can get close to and
which for me can often be more appealing than larger ones. One particular
spot that springs to mind for that kind of thing is the gorge going up to
Stob Ban from the Lairig Leacach bothy.

I think the Falls of Glomach are the most impressive in Scotland that I've
seen.
Others I can remember are, the Lower Falls by the car park in Glen Nevis,
the Waterslide, Nevis Gorge, and Steall Falls further up the glen. The ones
by the road at the top of Glen Coe, the one in Glen Falloch very noticeable
from the A82 at the end of Loch Lomand, one on the way up to Mamore Lodge
from Kinlochleven, Falls of Dee by Braeriach in the Cairngorms, some with a
forest path to them by the Corran Ferry at Inchree, some more with a forest
path about 10 miles(?) north of Kinlochewe by Loch Maree, the claimed
highest falls in the UK are somewhere just south of Kylesku although they're
not as good as you might expect, some which might have been somewhere not
far from Tummel Bridge where you can watch salmon leap up. Sorry, I'm being
too vague now, I can picture several more I've seen but haven't got a very
good memory for details of places I visit and can't remember where exactly
they are.

There's this one, which is an absolute abstrad to photograph, but I'm
sure would look brilliant from the other side of the valley. Long walk
to get to it.

Also there's Inchcree waterfalls, which is signposted just off the A82 near
the Corran ferry. This looks very impressive after continuous rain.

NN 155 543 At the end of Coire Gabhail (AKA the hidden valley) on the
southside of Glencoe. Three waterfalls plunge down in the same pool. You
look down on them instead of looking up.

perhaps stitch these together in PS to get a complete picture -
although this won't be easy due to the perspective issues.

A pleasant walk up to the falls from Loch Long, east up Glen Elchaig.
Plenty of Red deer around to snap on your way.

You could get around this by compiling a photomosaic, or praps just a
simple [vertical] pano.

And cows!

There are a lot of falls in the Glomach area.. The ones behind the
hostel at CAmus Luinne and a couple visible from the
Dorusduain-Glomach path come to mind.

The boat trip is good! you can get some good photos as you go up the Loch.
The guy who takes the trip is the best story teller too....talks about it

Jumped on an evening tour once after being sold it at Kylesku.... A
real laugh, and a lot of wildlife pointed out.

The scenery is not bad either.....

You could try Bracklinn Falls just outside Callendar, however access is a
bit tricky at the moment as the floods seemed to have washed out a lot of
the paths and I believe the bridge over the falls as well - must have been
an impressive site as the bridge was a good 25ft above the falls when I last
saw it!.
