Max Sciandri has decided to end his career as a pro bike rider. The British rider who started his career in Italy announced his decision to his Directeur Sportif Bjarne Riis. Sciandri, 37, is a member of the CSC team. He adopted British nationality through his mother in order to compete in the World Championships and Olympic Games after being denied a place by the Italian cycling federation. A pro since 1989 he has won a Bronze in the Olympic time trial as well as stages in the Giro and Tour de France.
I remember seeing Max win a stage of the Criterium Dauphiné Liberé in Grenoble after a long break over the Vercors in driving rain. I spoke to him next day at the stage start in Charles les Eaux and he seemed like a very nice guy.

Hmmm well he was born in Derby... well known retirement spot of Italian pro-cyclists. So who knows?

I remember him ripping the legs off of everyone on one of the local training rides here in L.A. (Nichols canyon). I think his parents have a restaurant or some type of biz here in West L.A.

Also, he didn't win bronze in the Olympic TT -- it was in the road race.
