Schrader vs. Presta

It depends on the rim of the bike. If it's a wide MTB rim, there's no reason whatsoever not to switch. However, in a narrower road rim, the extra width of the valve hole (I think a Schrader is about 9mm) may cause a reduction in rim stability. Also, the valve width of the Schrader may prevent narrow tires from being mounted to a narrow rim.

Personally, I prefer Presta valves (even on my MTB), I find them easier to inflate and not as much air loss when removing the pump. To prevent snapping off the valve, it's important to apply the pump head as straight as possible, without applying any side-to-side force.

And you are correct, Schrader valves are more durable. It's all about personal preference and what your rim can accept.
