One minor problem I've always had with using Schrader tubes was the valve stem would get sliced up from the valve stem hole in my rims. I tried buffing the edges out smooth but it still would get sliced up. I tried using Presta tubes but they don't work very well. The type of rims I have there isn't a flat surface for the lock nut and the diameter of the valve stem hole is Schrader size. So I came up with a solution that is working out great and I'm curious to see if anyone else has done this or what anyone might think about it.
First I bored the valve stem hole on my front tire out from .330" to ..375". Then I took some leftover ABS plastic stock we had laying around at work and made a bushing about a half-inch in length with small flanges on either side of the top. The top has a little counter sink to account for the small radius from the tube to the valve stem and to prevent the valve stem from being pushed up into the tube. It fits inside the rim under the spoke nut protector ring and fits nice and snug, but it's still easy to put in and take out. At the same time I also made a sort of Presta valve adapter. Basically the same piece that goes inside the rim only a smaller diameter valve stem hole and another piece that slides up over the bottom with a flat head and a notch on the underside to match the angle on the inside of the rim.
My front tire is Schrader with the valve stem protector and the rear tire is Presta with the adapter. A little odd looking but I wanted to try both types out at the same time. After almost a month of normal riding for me, (about 100 miles altogether of trail and road, though I'm sure it's more trail than road:-), I haven't had problems or noticed any excessive wearing with the pieces I made, and the only difference so far is my Schrader valve stem doesn't have a single slice mark.

I have a simple solution. Don't use Schrader valves. If you have Schrader sized holes use a grommet. And lock nuts are unnecessary.

Yes, I had seen those things at my LBS but it didn't look like they would last very long. Besides, I hate going there, my LBS is employed with a bunch of arrogant Homer Simpson clones. I suppose what I did would be a little much for some but being a machinist doth have its advantages. The parts I made will last a long, long time. Plus there's also a certain sense of satisfaction of being able to customize my bike my own way. Now I can use either Schrader or Presta without any problems.
