  1. Hi,

Which routes to the Pike would you recomend to a walker with a fear of
heights. I ask as I took a friend upto Eskdale last week where we
attempted the Pike via Great Moss and Little Narrowcove. The rocky
scar was fine until we reached Chambers Crags where the path became
both steeper and more boundler strewn. If we had continued the
scramble upto the top of Little Narrowcove, would there have been much
exposure on the way to the summit? Maybe it appeared worse from below
(I hope so because I would like to attempt the summit via this
    original route).

I had originally planned a route with from Wasdale over the Corridor
Route or from Langdale over Ill Crag and Broad Crag but binned both
ideas due to possible exposure indicated on the OS map.

    Cheers,

    Paul.

Define your exposure fear. Is it straight down below your feet or on a
narrow ridge with the drop to both sides.

The pull up from the top of Narrow Cove is not that steep and soon falls
back to almost a summit plateau on which is the cairn and trig point of the
    Pike.

Route from Langdale meets the Narrow Cove route but is not exposed (My level
of exposure). The main path does not take in Ill Crag or Broad Crag. Those
    would have to be diversions.

Corridor route has two or three places where hands are useful over a short
drop but again in my judgement is not exposed. Natural start to the Corridor
route would be Seathwaite not Wasdale.

Consider route from Wasdale.Brown Tongue and Hollow Stones. Then Mickledore
    and onto summit from there

I'm not familiar with the Little Narrowcove route so can't really
comment on that. However, if your friend doesn't like boulders, that's
going to be a problem whichever way you go. Broad Crag, in particular,
    is a huge boulder field.

While there are sheer drops from both Ill Crag and Broad Crag, the main
tourist path doesn't overlook them. So apart from the boulders, that
might be your best bet (either from Langdale or from Seathwaite).

The tourist route from Seathwaite does pass near to a drop into Ruddy
Gill, but I'm sure that you can stay far enough away for it not to be a
problem. There are some bits on the Corridor Route that your friend
probably wouldn't like (one easy downhill scramble and looking down the
drop into the top end of Piers Gill.)

A ruddy long way round that is! Easiest from Wasdale is follow the tourist
route "Brown Tongue". No "exposure whatsoever;-)

  5. I agree that route to Scafell Pike with least exposure is to start from
Wasdale and ascend via Brown Tongue to Hollow Stones - DONT then go via
Mickledore instead head NE to Lingmell col and then to the top via the broad
    north ridge.

The worry is that anyone attempting to climb Scafell Pike ought to have at
least a basic understanding of map reading - if this is so then the easiest
    route should be obvious.

I hope such threads as this do not encourage the ill prepared to venture
    higher than the should.

Wasdale Hollow Stones is best bet.

up the valley between Lingmel and Scafell, turn left onto Lingmel
coll, then right over rough easy ground to summit
