I recall reading somewhere recently (either on this forum or in the Sydney Morning Herald) that cycling has become the new golf - it's apparently becoming the sport of choice for upper class types who socialise on Saturday mornings, and that owning a nice expensive shiny bike is regarded as a status symbol.
Maybe this particular financial group have decided to test this out...

Look at who sponsors Around the Bay in a Day - it's a medium sized financial firm. A friend works there and says the boss is a mad keen cyclist. Has set up showers, lockers and towel service for employees who commute by bike. Has even talked about getting a TDF team together.
I assume you mean a team to go and watch the TDF. Or does he really mean sponsor a team to compete??? :eek:
Do you know what the top riders EARN??? He must have a cash filled doona on his bed and a gold plated toilet seat... :p
According to the "official TDF guide", most TDF teams have a 2006 budget of around AUS$10 - $12 million. Notable exception is T-Mobile on $25mil, but then you have at the other end of the scale Agritubel at $6m. Not bad value, given a typical cycling team has 25 to 30 riders on their roster plus support staff. Compare that with a typical V8 Supercar team which has an annual budget of around $12mill, and that's just for 2 cars on the track. If we all check under the couch for loose change, we could easily get a team together.

A friend of mine works at Portfolio Partners and says if you don't cycle you are frowned upon. Amazing what influence the man at the top can have!!
