I am about to embark (well in 2 weeks time) on my first multi modal
journey. I want to cycle to my local station ( Sarn) and catch a train
to get me to Bristol. I know I will have to change at Cardiff, but how
do I go about booking a space for the bike on each train and the return?
Plus anyoen know what sort of ride it is from Temple Meads to City of
Bristol College?

The traffic around temple meads is very heavy, but there are farcilities
if you are unhappy cycling on these roads. In fact it might be better to
use the farcilities the first time there and back to find your way, and
avoid the big roundabout.
(On road) Exit temple meads, go down the road to the T junction in front
of the big hotel/pub. Turn right, and follow the road (staying on the
left) until you come to the cathedral. Go straight across the round
about, over the small swing bridge, straight over the mini round about,
and then straight across Queen square[1]. Go straight across the next
roundabout, and slightly to the left. There is a pedestrianised area on
the left, hop onto this just after the mine, and go across.
Here you can either
a) go left along the A4, and the college should be on the right
somewhere, (perhaps another road on the right)
b) go up the hill slightly, turn left just past the hotel, and go across
college green, past the cathedral, and the college should be on the left
somewhere.
If you are bringing a bike, bring plenty of locks etc, take the lits off
the bike when you leave it, and under no circumstances leave the bike
overnight. Use a cheap/hack bike if you have one.

I thought Temple meads was the bath side of the city centre, near that
metal overpass thing?

The metal overpass thing was torn down about nine years ago.
A quick check on google maps shows it is 2 miles by car, about 1.7 miles
by the route I said, but there is a footbridge that should cut it down
down about 1.2 miles. (I think you can cycle over the foot bridge, which
is just above where it says floating harbour on the map).
There is also more than one campus near the docks.

Erm that's a church! (biggest parish church in England), the cathedral's
on College Green.
I'd avoid that part: from exiting the ticket barrier go straight ahead;
(*not* left out the main entrance), out the side, across a car park (you
need to watch here!) and down a ramp. Go left down the deserted service
road to the far side of the big roundabout. Use the crossing to get to
Portwall Lane and use that to get to the swingbridge.

I'd keep to the lhs of the square, then cross the docks on the horny
bridge, and make your way through to the main road. College on right
along there. This *is* the main road, so an alternative is to cross it
and up the steps to the side of the big hotel and then it's car-free
along college Green and past the cathedral and library.

I've done Cardiff to Bristol a few times with a bike. There is nowhere
to put it, other than the doorways, and the train can get busy. However,
I have never booked a bike onto any train and have yet to be refused
access. (Always travelling outside rush hour). You should be ok.

I saw it halfway through demolition - looked amusingly like a giant
scalextric set, with these huge segments of road getting piled up.

pedestrains, it should be open by now.

I keep forgetting the bridge is there.
If walking it's dim ots to do the start bit (out the side entrance) then
continue on past the shops, cut across the square (not being tempted by
KT wetherspoons), and cross the ringroad, around the firestation (not
stopping in the Cornubia) and right to go over Bristol bridge along
Baldwin st to avoid the Corn st pubs (walk straight past the Fishmarket)
then across the central racetrack (avoiding the White Lion and then the
Bunch of Grapes on the other side) and up onto college green. keep going
and stop when you get to the college, don't carry on to the Myrtle Tree
and Bag of Nails, or pop into the 3 Tuns.

On the return leg note carefully the time of the last train. It might
take a while to get back!

It is not only theft, but vandalism is also a very big issue, and IMHO
vandalism has got more common recently. I see loads of bikes with cables cut,
wheels bent etc.
