I didn't see the race on tv, I saw nothing of this on cyclingnews, velonews, nothing on other sites. So what was the deal? Is Discovery so holy/their PR machine so sweeping that such bungles go unreported? Who was driving the car? Yates right? Seems like a potentially pretty big director sportifing oversight in a race of this magnitude. Any further info on this incident?

it was a ploy to make savoldelli lose the giro to keep his ambitions in check.
just like bruyneel didn't give heras the good TT helmet at the vuelta and take him to the wind tunnel.

I saw the stage on TV. Savoldelli had either tossed or lost his water bottles at the bottom of the Finestre and after the Simoni group had attacked was trying to get his car up to him. The motocam kept focusing on his empty bottle cages and then panning over to the bike next to him, with bottles in the cages. Yeah, after the first shot we got it. The road was narrow and there were riders strung out down the road so although the car eventually got up to within one switchback, it couldn't get any closer. Savoldelli had some gel packets in his pocket and sucked on those. I hate doing that without water to wash that stuff down. Finally he reached someone who'd been positioned part way up the climb with water bottles and spare wheels (no close-up of the wheels, but I wondered if they were cyclocross-like in case the top of the climb was wet). I didn't see any other team have help stationed up the climb but until I read Ewoud's post I'd figured that all of them had; I was surprised to learn that they hadn't.
The other reason he might've been gesticulating is because he was trying to get the team to pay more to Ardila and Van Huffel.

I think there was also at least one Lampre guy on the Finestre. Simoni got a hand-up during the dirt section of the climb. Looked to me like he - the Lampre bottle guy - had spare wheels also. I think perhaps Bruyneel was exaggerating a tad in his interview.
