OMG! You could have killed her.

Probably. Freaky thing about it was I was on the upstairs "deck" and she was
on the garage floor and I shot the basketball backboard and it ricocheted and
next thing I heard was her scream!

I didn't shoot her intentionally!!!!!! She wasn't in my sights!!!!!!

I've been a big fan of Ken's (store bought) Caesar salad dressing. But that's

    Andy

Commercially, I like Girard's Italian and pretty much any chunky bleu
    cheese.

Homemade is either the classic dijon vinegarette (I'm pretty sure
everyone already knows how to make this one, so I'll skip the recipe)
or something from a ranch base.

    Here's mine:

    1cup mayonnaise
    1cup sour cream
    1cup buttermilk

To this, you can add pretty much anything. Among my favorites are:
minced garlic and crumbled bleu cheese
    lemon juice and dill weed
    black pepper and garlic

There's a dressing my gramma used to make that I really enjoyed. I
don't recall the recipe, but I do remember it had a can of condensed
tomato soup, vinager, oil, sugar, probably garlic and onions, and it
was made in a blender. anyone have any ideas?

    thanks,

    b.

I like Wishbone brand, usually Italian or Ranch.

When I do home made, it's usually a light spritzing of fresh squeezed
lemon juice and a smidge of Olive oil with some fresh ground pepper.

    Depends on my mood.

    I prefer Lemon to vinegar.

One of my favorites on tomatoes is just mayo and ketchup

    Recipe:
Put a gob of may in a cup
Add ketchup and mix. If you want it more pink, add more ketchup.

On cucumbers and onions our favorite is sour cream and vinegar

    Recipe:
Put a gob of sour cream on the cucumber slices
Add a little vinegar and mix
Let stand at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator.

    You put Catsup on tomatoes?????

    Ew.

    Sorry!

I like just straight mayo on those with a little pepper.

Speaking of Ken's, I love their vidalia onion salad dressing.

Smart & Final (a "commercial" joint open to the public) has a yummy
"Vidalia Onion Burgandy Poppy Seed" dressing under the Virginia Brand
    brand.

I like minimalist dressings. I think the bottled dressings have so much
salt and sugar that they dominate anything you use them on.

I use balsamic vinegar, Italian (oil & vinegar) and various combinations
such as pressing a fresh clove of garlic or a piece of ginger to extract
the juice and adding that or a couple drops of roasted sesame oil. A
squeeze of lemon or lime is good too.

Last night I made a salad with lettuce, a little cabbage, matchsticks of
daikon and carrot, thinly sliced vidalia onion, strips of red pepper and
cherry tomatoes and a little Parmigiano Reggiano . I dressed it with
olive oil and vinegar and a couple grinds of black pepper. There is a
ton of flavor there and a bottled dressing would have just hide all of
    the nice flavors.

I learned to make my own salad dressings decades ago. Why would I
give up the ability to customize the dressing to the meal at hand and
our own tastes and preferences? Why would I spend 5 to 10 times the
    cost?

Aside from basic mayo and (tarragon) vinegar, simple but tasty, this is one
of my favorites. I think it's from Bon Appetit.

    CREAMY TOMATO SALAD DRESSING

    1/4 cup drained canned tomatoes
    1/4 cup chopped parsley
    1/4 cup cider vinegar
    1/4 cup mayonnaise
    1 teaspoon dried basil *
    1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    1 garlic clove, minced
    1 teaspoon superfine sugar
    1/2 cup olive oil
    Salt and pepper to taste

Puree all ingredients except olive oil in processor or blender. With motor
running, add oil and blend until smooth. Add salt and pepper.

    * The recipe calls for dried basil but I think I'll give it a try with fresh
    this summer.

I'm with you. Oil, vinegar, various other ingredients was the general
daily dressing. Occasionally something made with a mayo base. I like to
rub the salad bowl with a clove of garlic to impart that flavor.
Nothing more disgusting to me than bottled "Italian dressing" which
tastes full of artificial flavors. Blech.

I like Ken's dressings, too. Raspberry Walnut, Greek, Italian with
aged Romano, Balsamic Vinaigrette........ yum. When I feel like
eating [censored], their Honey Mustard and Country French dressings are
really good, too. I particularly like to dip asparagus in the Honey
Mustard - it makes an excellent dipping sauce!

Where do you find Ken's dressings? With the other dressings in the
condiment aisle or in the refrigerated section? I'm not sure I've
    seen this brand.

Most of the time we do our own dressing with oil, vinegar, salt,
pepper, parm cheese and maybe some garlic and basil.

I think Ken's is a regional thing. I never found it on the West coast. To
be honest, when I moved to Florida from Hawaii, I think the only bonus was
    Ken's dressing. :-P

I'm weird with salads too. Hate dressing but love crunchy vegetables. I
will sometimes put salsa on my salad if I am having a Mexican food craving.
    Which I often am!

Here is another but not for the faint hearted. Mince garlic on a
cutting board, and using some salt and the side of your knife, make it
into a paste. Put it into the salad bowl, add olive oil and use a fork
to incorporate. Put greens on top and mix well, adding olive oil to
taste. You don't find it very often, but I'm told it is Tuscan in origin.

The following is not personally aimed at Andy, or anyone else:

How about this? NEVER put dressing on a salad until you have it in
YOUR OWN salad bowl. Never assume that anyone is going to want
whatever it is that another person might want on their salad.

Also, never put jizzy jarred mayo, honey mustard, or whatever kind of
slop on sandwiches until they are on your own plate.

Salad dressing is a condiment, not an ingredient. No one should
assume that another person would prefer the same condiment(s) as
    oneself.

What did folks do before the advent of bottled dressing... bottled
dressing hasn't been around all that long. My mother used to toss a
bowl of salad fixings or build a composed salad with a couple tins of
bristling sardines and the juice of lemon... sometimes instead of
sardines a couple cans of chopped anchovy fillets. Those are still
the best dressing. I don't know about all those claims to caesar
salad, long before it became in vogue my mother invented it, in fact
it was her mother before her, and probably theirs before them...
caesar salad stories from Mexico are a complete and utter sham.
Norwegians have been building salads with preserved fish dressings
(say herring) of all sorts for thousands of years. My grandfather on
my father's side made the world's best caesar/nikita salad dressing
long before Caesar was a twinkle in his mother's eye... beluga caviar,
minced onion, and minced hard cooked egg yolks, all mashed with
vodka... wonderful over sorrel greens, cucumber coins, and sliced
beets.... with a loaf of Russian black bread with butter and black
radish slices, and a platter of boiled beef knuckles with horseradish,
    can't get more gourmet
