  1. Hey all,

I am sure this has been discussed before here but I am a newbie.

How do you prevent saddle sores?

How do you get rid of them?

    Thanks so much

    Charles

  3. Q: How do you prevent saddle sores?

A: Shave ass. Lube ass. Ride.

Q: How do you get rid of them?

A: Lance with a hot poker. Drain.

  4. Very Hemingwayesque :-)

    Thanks.

I don't think Armstrong is into poking people in the ass with a hot stick,
    but I could be wrong.

  7. seriously, there is all kinds of lotions and potions and
stuff like that, try buying a pair of very expensive bibs,
from castelli, etc with a diaper like chamois. this works.
then buy diaper cream and rub it on your ass, this works but
you will get funny looks from your GF/wife.
then buy a flank of steak (venison is fine too)
cut it very thin, and place in under your crotch
while you are riding. this is what the old timers did,
also try eating fast meats too, cheetah is impossible to get,
try deer if you are like a cat 3.

And don't take any offers of free "homemade" beef jerky from a
    cyclist...

I had problems with them last year, but now this works for me.

Always wear clean shorts and get out of them as soon as possible after a
ride. Shop in the infant section of the supermarket. Get yourself some
wipes to clean off the area and apply Desitin (recommended in rec.bicycles.*
FAQ) before you put on your shorts. Shower as soon as possible after the
ride. If you get the pimple kind, lancing them seems to help them heal
faster, but be careful. That's a easy way to spread the infection. I've
never had any luck with cortisone creams (even prescription kind), but
    that's what the pro use.

    As always, YMMV

    Stop lancing old rbr wounds.

Damn, the link in that old thread now suggests that that company no longer
deals in dried meat floss. Now what am I going to do to fill my flossy
meat needs? I'd like to switch to unwrapped meat sticks but then there are
    those sanitation and spoilage issues.

Right, as if keeping meat floss in your shorts doesn't already result
in sanitation and spoilage issues. Google ought to turn up some
meat floss suppliers. When you find some, let me know - I want
to try this recipe for "Meat Floss Buns"

    <http://jodelibakery.netfirms.com/bread/meat%20floss%20buns/meat%20floss%20buns.htm>

The buns look pretty good actually, I just don't know about the
part at the end where you add mayonnaise and meat floss.

    Ben
    again with the food

    Charles

Having my first go-round with sores, myself. Had to pop one just
before a ride, which was a pretty miserable experience, a fast 50 mile
ride on rough roads with an open sore.

    1. Keep your cham's clean, wash thoroughly and air dry, turned inside
out. I usually take my kit into the shower, right after the ride, and
clean it up there, with emphasis on getting all the lube and sweat out
    of the chamois.

    2. Keep yourself clean, take a brief shower of the lower half of your
body before a ride. Just getting up in the morning and pulling your
kit on isn't helping as the area sores occur is a perfect breeding
    round for fungus and bacteria.

    3. Use a good chamois lube. Even apply a bit to the area of skin where
sores turn up. Get out of your kit as soon as you get home and clean
up, don't lounge around in your shorts after a ride.

    4. Off days, bathe and put some protectant on the area. I've been
    using Neosporin Plus.

    5. After a ride, if you're going to rest, wear boxers so you can
    air-out the affected area.

I've gone in a few weeks from an aggrevated open sore to having the
    situation pretty well under control.

After lancing one it's not a bad idea to wipe it down with some rubbing
alcohol or dilluted hydrogen peroxide. Pus is usually a lot of white
corpuscles and some bacteria, best to clear any of that bacteria before
it finds a home in a neighboring pore.
