Running vs Cycling

For those of you hanging on the edge of your seat waiting to see what I decided to do, I thought I'd send a response, since I started this thread. I decided to take Spin classes. They are free here at my employer and they are 45 minutes of pure torture and I love every minute of it. Man, I don't get that much Cardio in my 1:15 20 mile commute home every night.

While I'm not yet seeing any weight loss, I'm definitely not gaining either. I'm also weighing myself after class which is at 4:30pm and I use to weigh myself after the ride to work at 7:00am. I'm sure those are 2 totally different weights.

I'd recommend these classes to anybody wanting to get some cardio in while still turning pedals. While it doesn't replace a ride on the open road, it will do for now until temps get back in the 50's. I don't like to think of myself as a fair weather rider, I just don't have the right gear to do it, and can't afford to run out and get it all at once. I'll get it pieced together soon enough and should be commuting well into Fall next year.

Thanks for all the input. Happy cranking..

There should be more classes like the ones you mention in the workplace! May i suggest rowing as an alternative to cycling, or as a form of excersize to keep fit for rowing

Sorry, I meant rowing to keep fit for cycling! Asingle scull over a couple of thousand metres going full bore will let you know you've been busy. Join a rowing club nearby if you have one

On another subject. Can someone advise how I can start a forum on another subject.

These forums are fun and I'd like to start my own as well as remain here!
Thanks

Gavin

It is a myth. Actually, the body increases it's metabolism when it's cold to maintian homeostasis. The Hypothalamus region of the primordial brain stem boosts one's metabolic rate for temperature regulation. Otherwise certain vital systems would shut down causing hypothermia.

I was just wondering which one is a better cardio workout, Cycling or Running? While I'm going to try my best to continue to ride through the rough Iowa winter, I'm thinking about getting on the treadmill this winter instead of the stationary bike. Neither one excite me too much - mostly because the scenery is the same all the time - and I'm not much of a runner.

But then again, I wasn't much of a cyclist until a couple months ago.
Dude,

Lived in ME till recently. In the winter ran intervals on the treadmill. Tough in the spring switching to cycling. Had the cardio but not the spin. This past winter tried stat bike instead. In the spring, first club ride got dropped. Previous two seasons never got dropped. Never. Subsequent rides continued to get dropped. Checked my training diary and actually did more training (on the stat bike than on the treadmill meas'd by hours) that winter than past winters. Also Peak Performance Online publiched results of a study that show for cardiovasc bang-for-the-proverbial-buck cannot beat a treadmill (I'm assuming you still have to run hard on it - not like all those shlubs who walk on a treadmill). So for me I'll never use a stat bike for winter training. Work hard on the treadmill instead.

My experience with runners that turn to cycling - their endurance gained from running is better than many other cyclers. On the other hand, they suffer from knee problems (that's why they turn to cycling:)).

running seems to be the best cardio, but it's definately way more impact. I have problematic knees, and I love running, can keep the weight down easily, but cycling is my better sport because of the impact, I try to run, or jog as my knees will allow. I'm in the process of getting another road bike, My giant TCR carbon was stolen by some scum. So, it's just work and slave to get another one.
