  1. I am planning to buy running shoes. I took up running as hobby (1 yr
    still counting...).
    I run 3 to 4 miles 4 or 5 times a week at 5.5 to 6 miles/hr. Current
Shoes (New Balance 475) are not comfortable(close to blisters after
run). I was wondering if there are any moderately priced shoes out
    there.
I am not trying to run a marathon, I just want to run.

Please suggest me Shoe brand and name (#) etc.

Sure there are cheap shoes. A couple of last years' Vitruvian models
were on sale for $30 last I looked: http://www.vitruvianrunning.com

The Vitruvians are perfectly reasonable running shoes. The only snag
is that they might be completely wrong for you and contribute to an
injury, which would prevent you from running for a while and probably
cost you more in doctor's visits than you saved on the shoes.

So - at least once, at the dawn of your running career - why don't you
go to a good running-specific store and let someone who really knows
what he's doing and can see your feet and see you walk and run etc. -
let him or her tell you exactly what type of shoe you require, and from
there, help you determine which brand, model, and size (you might be
    surprised) best suits you.

In future years, knowing that you need say a "motion control" or "light
stability" shoe or whatever, you can choose to shop sources like online
clearances with much less risk of hurting yourself to save a few bucks.

I second Charlie's comment. And even the running shoe stores have
discounted shoes (discontinued or last year's models).

Now you didn't say what "moderately priced" means to you. For me that's
$60-70 when I shop for running shoes. I buy from local stores with a
rare exception of buying a model well known to me in one of those
    discount "factory direct" stores.

So follow Charlie's advice here. Treat yourself to a really good pair
of shoes to start your running career off right. You'll find it is
    money well spent.

    Enjoy the run.

I don't think 475 is even a serious running shoe.

Running shoes start at $80-, so you need to find some sort of clearance sale
or something if you want to go cheaper than that (e.g. roadrunnersports.com,
    eastbay.com always have clearance shoes).

Your best bet would be to just go to a running store and have them help you
out. You should be able to get something decent for about $85 or so. Choosing
the wrong shoe and having to replace it (e.g. because it doesn't fit or it's not
the right shoe for you) and/or ending up injured really isn't a very good cost
    saving measure.

    Cheers,

  5. Thanks for your replies. When I meant Moderately Price i implied
    $60-$70.
As suggested I will visit my local Academy(sports) store and see if
they can help me looking at my running style.
I wonder if they can tell me what brand, model, and size best fits my
needs so that I can buy those products online to save few bucks.

Thanks once again for your comments.

Now I need to search for some running shorts, my present shorts give me
hard time after running for 3 miles (it gets wet and becomes higly
uncomfortbale between inner thighs). I guess I will check with my local
    sports store about shorts also.

You can go to the Saucony or Brooks or other web sites and input
your needs. These sites will give you options for shoes you need.

But really, there's nothing like talking to a person at a real running shoe
store and have them find a good pair for you. For the extra forty bucks,
you can be assured of much more pleasant running experience and a
much greater chance of sticking with it.

I'm not sure if Academy is the type of store that specializes in
running shoes. I could be wrong, but I think they're more of an
all-everything type of store. What you should be looking for is a
"real" running shoes store. For example, in my area (Atlanta, GA), we
have Fleet Feet Sports or Phidipidies http://www.phidippides.com. Both
of these stores cater to runners. They will watch you run on a
treadmill or outside and determine which shoe will best fit your
    running style.

I suppose you could take advantage of their knowledge in that way.
However, these stores aren't exaclty raking in the dough. I'd at least
buy your first pair from them to pay them for their services.

Lots of people use a product called Body Gluide
    http://tinyurl.com/7bv5o, or SportShield http://tinyurl.com/8bpdl. My
preference is olive oil. Any of these will lubricate your inner thighs
so that you could wear just about any type of shorts without the
    chafing problems.

....so you put a little virgin between your thighs and that does the
trick? humm....sounds more like a trick.

Yeah, I've grown fond of the olive oil too.

Just be aware, as any cook - well, anyone who at least occasionally
cooks anything vaguely Mediterranean, at least - knows, extra virgin
olive oil has a lower smoking point than smuttier grades like plain ol'
virgin or pure. So if you're *really* fast, go with the cheap stuff.
    Or better yet peanut oil.

Pendejo, thinking Andy Hass must use peanut oil, or since he seems to
be stationed in the Midwest, more likely corn oil

    Charlie summerized it well.

As Phil said this is not exactly a place that has people that can tell a
red stiletto high heel from a brogan. Try to find a mom and pop place
has runners for sales people. Not the Footlocker in a mall.

All they can do is say you need a shoe that has X, Y and Z
characteristics. They may have 5 different brands and models that fill
those requirements and you will need to try them on and take your best
shot. Finding the "right" shoe is not an exact science.,

Probably has a thick seam. You can try some bodyglide or Vaseline but
look for shorts that have seamless seams.

    Good luck!!

Sure, but don't tell them until afterwards.

    Dude, WAY too much info.

Hey stupid, he needs to go to a REAL running shop, not online. The
online stuff doesn't tell a newbie nough.

Cross my heart and hope to be kicked off of Usenet, Doug, I swear this
    is the truth:

Cooling down from my tempo run two evenings ago, I was jogging slowly
down State Street, between Nevins and Bond. Just as I pass a
brownstone, a twenty-something girl - Thai maybe, hard to be sure in
the dark - walks out the front door. Impossibly tall and slim, showing
off a vast and lovely expanse of midriff from just south of the Grand
Tetons to barely north of Brazillian territory. Wearing what had to be
at least 4" heels (color undetermined: again, the dark), maybe more.
If she doesn't have an ad in the Village Voice, several of her twin
    sisters do.

Ten seconds after passing her, I hear a clackety-clack behind me, a
perfect echo of my own footsteps. Look back, and there she is
mimicking me, jogging down the street at my 9:30-10:00 pace and rhythm
in these, these, virtual stilts. It was brilliant.

The story ends here because either [a] Mrs. Pendejo may read this, or
[b] I'm too much the p---y for anything more to have happened.
Regardless I must say, this has broadened my conception of "running
shoes". And I'll probably always cool down on that stretch of State
    for years to come.
