  1. I posted a couple of weeks back. I've started running again at age 42. I was fairly serious years
ago, and raced a lot in my 20's, but I've been away for 15 years. I live in the midwest, and the
weather has just started getting nasty. I don't mind running in cold weather, but sometimes the
conditions are such that you just can't run outdoors. This wasn't as much of an issue in my 20's, as
I was unmarried with no kids, so I could better pick and choose my days and times easier. Now, I
have very specific times which are available and it may be sleeting with 30 MPH winds. Yes, I know
that some of you will run outdoors in sub-zero weather and 8 feet of unplowed snow, but I won't.

I saw the discussion on treadmills, and I actually own a decent treadmill (Precor M9.25) but I don't
care for treadmill running. How about indoor tracks? I live less than 1/2 mile from a brand new YMCA
facility, which has a track (8 laps per mile). Any thoughts on indoor running vs treadmill as
    compared to outdoors?

  2. Trash the treadmill and get an eliptical trainer. I have a Nordictrack 910 I use in bad weather, and
it's MUCH more of a WO than any treadmill even when set at max incline. Check them out at Sears,
you'll buy one as have several others who looked into them. Cheers!

Yes, it's bloody stupid. Buy yourself some decent Gore-tex gear and get your flabby ass outside. You
won't die, and you'll be part of the world instead of hiding away from its idiosyncrasies. You may
even start to enjoy the snow.

Running isn't just about running, it's about being outdoors and all that manly, ancient woodsman,
stuff. You're missing a whole load of fun if you never come home with icy eyebrows. Having said
that, anyone who runs in the rain is certifiable.

Running indoors carries an injury risk. The reason is that the tightness of the turns puts a lot of
stress on knees and ankles. It's not as bad on the more modern 8 lap tracks as on the older 11 lap
ones, but it's still definitely worse than running outdoors (unless you fall on the ice). People
racing 60-800 do short reps, short rest (run the 80m straights all-out, walk the turn to recover),
but people running much mileage tend to get injured. If I lived where I HAD to chose betreen indoor
track and treadmill, I think I'd do slow mileage on the treadmill and very limited speedwork on the
    indoor track

Racing indoors is VERY cool. It's very different feel from racing outdoors--more like running in
somebody's living room. The spectators and practically on top of you, and it can get VERY loud. Even
though I live in Southern California, where we have outdoor track, under the lights in the evening,
in the middle of December, I'm still planning a trip or two to Reno for indoor track (of course,
there is *something* else to do in Reno 🙂 because it's so cool.

It's a phrase which was brought into common usage in England via the 1828 Madhouses Act whereby a
certificate had to be signed by two doctors to indicate that the subject of the certificate was, in
their opinion, suffering from a mental illness. On receipt of this notice, an individual could be
detained in a house for insane persons. This was amended somewhat by the 1832 Madhouses Act and by
the 1890 Lunacy Act. In 1959 the Mental Health Act suggested the replacement of the word 'certify'
by the word 'section', so crazy people are not longer 'certified' but 'sectioned' under the Mental
    Health Act.

Put simply, it means that you're crazy.
