yep, they can sell at a margin that will keep them in business or way below and
hope that volume will take care of the low margin. BUT, as i said, discounters
or shimano will do so until they try to buy from the distributor and then they
will see that they cannot buy it. If the distributor supplies a discounter,
then shimano JP will cease selling to them.

Any manufacturer can choose who they sell to. There is no 'right' to buy
    anything, even in Australia.

That implies Shimano JP would dump an entire market for the sake of thumbing
its nose at the law. I don't think so. Shimano Oz would get sued into the
Dark Ages if they tried that sort of [censored]. You have this amazingly
arrogant assumption that the American way is the only way. It isn't.

There's no right to break the law of the land either even if it does involve
    making a profit.

They have done exactly that when they limited in the US who could sell shimano
    MO or via the internet.

We'll see if there are discounters of DA/XTR and sooin ultegra 10s..in OZ, I
    doubt it.

Besides, if the cost of these have gone up(as they have, since OEM resale is
    closed), why give it away?

Congratulations!! You have choosen to imply some sort of BS to me for our
    previous 'exchange'.

I guess I could say that you don't have a farging clue about retail in general
and US retail specifically, thay you are once again, blowin smoke and using
    mirrors...but I won't.

They have not done "exactly that". They have done something substantially
different. The one thing Shimano absolutely positively has not done is dump
    the US market.

No, I said it because your entire argument is so naive in that
characteristically unthinking American libertarian way. Every country has
its own laws and ways of going about things and far from dumping these
markets the reality is that companies like Shimano simply adapt to them no
matter how they might grumble. If Shimano tries price fixing in Australia
they'll get done because it's illegal and they know it, even if you don't
    want to know.

It has nothing to do with the prices retailers sell at... it has
everything to do with where the retailer is buying the product..

Shimano is simply enforcing an agreement that has almost always been
in their OEM sales contract. Specifically that someone who buys parts
as a manufacturor to build them onto a bike at the wholesale level, is
forbidden to sell those parts into the retail stream. Doing so costs
the origional manufacturor and its authorized distributors a lot of
money... When Shimano was trying to put Suntour out of the market in
the US OEM wholesale was between 25% and 60% lower than Regular
    wholesale.

Shimano certainly has the right to refuse to sell to someone who will
not abide by the terms of their contract.

As far as Austrailia goes only those companies actually making bikes
in Australia would be affected since they are the only ones who are
entitled to OEM pricing.. and even then they would only be affected if
it could be shown that they were passing OEM product into the retail
    stream.

None of that is price fixing...

On a bicycle equipped with Shimano components. 😉

  9. The thing that blew me away today is a Dura Ace 10 Speed Cassette is
180 bucks. Does that seem kind of high to anybody or am I out of
    shape.

To those of you in the know, or even those who enjoy speculating:

Why do I keep hearing/reading about imminent price hikes on bikes and/or
    components?
    Are they true?
I'd like to buy new, and am wondering whether to wait until this winter, or
if I'd be wiser to act sooner.

    Thanks all,

    Thomps
