  1. Helmets off during the race. Found out why yesterday.
Due to the heat and distance facter of Tour De France. Try taking off
your lid in a MTB race or show up not wearing one out you go.

Only on final climbs of at least 5KM. They won't let you do it on
    downhills or flats, afaik.

NPSquared, whose name stands for "No Pain, No Pain" used to climb
hills with his helmet hanging from the bottom of his Camelback.
(Probably still does) I used to chide him mercilessly that he had his
priorities all screwed up, protecting his butt and exposing his
    noggin. O well.

It's very common in Crested Butte to see people (locals) with their helmets
hanging off their handlebars on long climbs. I just wear mine. I figure I
have a body part that makes a perfect carrier for my helmet so why not just
keep it there? I also like to keep the sun from beating directly on my head.
That will always compount the "too hot" feeling for me.

I will hang mine on long fire road climbs, but nothing technical. That
seems to be when I crash the most.

I do that too if its a hot day and the climb is going to be ~30 minutes or
more. Heat can be dangerous too, and its amazing how much cooler it is
without a styrofoam layer on the noggin.

I've found that helmets sit well on a Camelbak with the chinstrap routed
around the armstraps and through that little loop on the top.

Heehee... My problem is to try to stop the "helmet burn" marks frm happening.
No good walking into work with a nice vent pattern in bright red on the bald
    pate. ;-)

  8. Crash without and you wish you had it on even at 10 - 13
    mph blacktop or dirt.

The past few days, I had occasion to strap the nugget protector to my
pack on really long a-technical climbs. Blaine is right, it's a lot
    cooler (temperature-wise).
