Handbuilt (by me) wheels, made with Campy Chorus OS hubs, Mavic Open Pro rims, laced 32 x 3 cross
front and back with DT 14/15 gauge double butted spokes, and topped off with Michelin Pro Race
100x23c tyres. These are my new race wheels, at any rate. They replace basically exactly the same thing, but with
Open 4 CD rims, which I've raced on for several years and are now being used for training and
commuting.Regards,
Suzy

Hi Suzy, Why'd you go 3 cross front? Why not go 2x for race wheels? 🙂 Gemma (2x front, 3x rear
race wheels 🙂 -

Hi Suzy, Why'd you go 3 cross front? Why not go 2x for race wheels? 🙂 Gemma (2x front, 3x rear
race wheels 🙂I have no particular preference one way or the other, to be honest, and didn't really put a lot of
thought into it when I built them. The different in spoke length is only about 6mm... I guess one
advantage by going three cross is that the front and back left spokes are all the same length. What I would have really liked to do is 32 x 3 cross on the back and 28 (or even 24) x 2 cross on
the front, but you have to buy Record hubs to go to 28 spokes, and I figured that the small decrease
in weight wasn't worth the huge increase in cost (not to mention hassle). My (very) old time trial
wheels are 28 x 2 cross, with bladed spokes, which are useful for ensuring the spokes don't wind up,
but which I cut my hand on pretty thoroughly once when I slipped unscrewing a freewheel. On another topic, the new Campy hubs are truly wonderful. My new wheels are about 220g lighter than
the old pair, due to the totally cool oversized aluminium axles that the new Campy hubs use. And
they're bliss to adjust.Regards,
Suzy

Mavic Ksyrium and Vredestein Fortezza. Very happy with both.

American Classic hubs, DT spokes, Velocity Fusion rims with a high spoke count for my fat a**e.
Hand-built by LBSG.AC hubs look quite trick but I don't think they are all that durable, at least not under me. There
is a bit of play in the catridge bearings. The manufacturer says this is normal, but I think it's
either a silly design or he's fibbing? That said, they've done a couple of years with reasonably
'heavy' use and they still work fine. I've no experience with anything similar, so can't make any
comparisons.hth hippy
