That's the ratio I'm running, and pretty much love it. I've done
harder and easier, but that's a great combo. Tops out early on
descents, but that's ok. Have you converted to fat Kendas yet? 😉

I was running a 34/17, which for the flats of NJ was perfect. The short
steep hills there were not a problem. Here in CO, there is no such
thing as short steep. Everything is long and drawn out. I just
couldn't push that gearing up these hills. So, I switched to 32/20. It
still may be too hard, but I'll give it a try. Might have to go 22, but
we'll see,

Your on a 26" SS, right? I think the 29" changes the ratio a bit which
is why I may have to go 32/22.

Are the Kendas bigger than the 2.5 Weirwolfs? I thought I had the
widest on there now.

yep, 26" on the born-again Bridgestone, and there was a guy out last
night on a Foes fxr with what looked like 2.3 Weirwolfs. He really
liked them.

Aw c'mon. Hartman's has short climbs (in comparison to a lot of other
rides around here). You'll need to bring that baby up next time you head
this way. Hartman's is an ideal SS playground. I had a fantastic SS
evening there on Wednesday. Perfection.

Good to hear you;re back up and running on the Niner. It's good for the
soul!

OK. How do I put this. There is something about being able to climb
those hills with the one gear. Don't get me wrong. When conditions
warrant it (and they more often do than don't for me in Colorado), I use
gears. If it is just me on the trail and I don't have to worry about
keeping up with anyone, the SS is just a great unrestricted ride. BY
the time others are thinking about what gear to get into, I'm already on
the momentum swing up the hill. Do I walk parts? You betcha. However,
in NJ most of those were hills I would have walked on any bike.

Yes, the climb was tough but it would be for anyone going up that hill
(Chimney Gulch already has the reputation). Switchbacks are my nemesis.
I can't do them on a geared or SS. Put me in a parking lot and I can
tailwhip left and right. Put me on the trail and I freak out. It's a
mental thing and it has nothing to do with the SS.

Lastly, it builds leg muscles. The only muscles I ever had on my body
and I'm actually quite proud of them. My son was watching a bike race
and he turns to me and says, "dad, those guys have big legs like you".
I said, but they know how to use them. 😉

In conclusion, I would say that you have to at least give it a try. I
was just as skeptical as you were. The only reason I gave it a shot is
because I found a great deal on a Cdale 1fg and figured that for $250 it
was worth the try. It was!

I think I just figured this out also (i.e., came to the same
conclusion). I really never understood why anyone would want not want
27 gears. I mean, if God had not wanted us to use 27 gears, he would
not have invented them, right (just kidding, I don't evene believe in
one).

However, a few rides ago I joked that I might as well be riding a
single-speed because I was riding the whole ride in the big chain ring.
My riding buddy Bob said, well, why not try mine (he had a SS 29er
Fisher Rig), so we traded bikes. It felt odd at first (mostly because
I'm a little guy and the 29er made me feel like I was driving an
18-wheeler I sat so far off the ground), but after a few miles I was
really diggin' it. It was really fun not to worry about shifting and
just ride. So, I think I finally get it.

I transition from flat to hill fairly well but I get what you guys are
saying about the
simplicity. It's not that I can't see and appreciate it. I just prefer
gears.

Ditto on the switchbacks. More often than not I have to dab. I was just

My legs are fine. I developed reliable running gear through years of
hard abuse. It's the knees that gave out on me! That's why I ride now
and I don't run anymore.

Try it you'll like it. Yeah yeah. That's the same mantra I hear from
a friend of mine. He's got a 29'er and, to be honest, I haven't ridden
it yet mostly because I'm afraid I'll like it and want one..............

You guys have fun and enjoy the ride. I'll keep shaking my head
and do my gear thing. Every once in a while I'll get all retro and
grouch about it.
