  1. Saturday nt around 11 pm, all was quiet at the happy hacienda, so I
loaded the Rev Father Titus, checked the Parker landing lights, plugged
them into the charger, then loaded the SUB and drove down to Military
Reserve, a trail system in the N-Central foothills. Covered in bug
spray, loaded with attitude, I was ready to rock!

Quite a bit of traffic on the M/R road close to midnight, (bizarre) but
I remember seeing a sign for some wedding. So I unload, and discover my
efforts at charging the lights drained them -dead-. Ahhhh!

Luckily, I had my Black Diamond climbing/camping head lamp, and luckily
again, I had a couple of zip ties in the camelback, so rather than
slink home to mamma with my tail between my legs, I figgerd I'd give it
a try! And rigged the unit to the helmet like I used to for commuting.

So, with about half a watt from the headlamp, I head up the back of
Central Ridge, up the huge stretch of switchbacks, over to Bucks (never
took it so slow), down the face, (the valley floor before me like a
bunch of diamonds tossed out onto black velvet) across the front, and
then into the forest and was on my way to the cement culvert drops when
    I heard voices...

"bla, bla, bla, ...deserves to get effed up the a__hole.." I hear from
some guy in a group who sounds really mad. By now it's 1am, and this
ain't a good sign... Hmm, if he can't find the object of his affection,
I certainly wasn't volunteering for the honor. And I wasn't in any
mood to tangle with a group out of Deliverance. So I stop and listen,
trying to determine if there was any way I was within range of his
    "affection."

The group is on the other side of the creek, and their voices fade, so
I continue, and eventually ride everything I can find out there, not
wanting to stop. Slow, due to low light, but perfect conditions!
Occasionally see some bright animal eyes light up before disappearing,
and the yellow 3/4's moon was really purdy.

So, I gotta check w/Dr Parker to find out what I did wrong to discharge
his infamous landing lights, and wanna get back to the night.

    Too much fun.

    Nice!

The closest I've ever come to night riding is doing the Desert Classic by
the light of a big full moon for about 40 minutes after dark
(intentionally), and a few times staying on the trail a bit later than
we'd planned! A half-watt would have been nice!

None of the parks around here are open after dark, so its sort of out of
the question. A few guys do it to ride the singletrack that is off-limits
to bikes. I'm just too much of a goody two-shoes, I guess.

Good thing no squealin' was involved!

    That is some late hours!
Carla and I used to do a lot of riding into the late night... fun
    times.
The best late late ride we ever took was on a night with a blanket of
    snow and a full moon.
We didn't turn on the lights once

    Too much coffee that day???

[censored], I'm sound a sleep at 11 pm each and every night...but then I'm usually
up at 4:30 am each and every morning.

aside from my sleep habits it sounds like you made a good time of it but
don't invite me up for a midnight ride... :-)

I think it was the nice long afternoon nap that got me wired for riding
til 3 in the morning. That and a Starbucks mocha to start the ride....

That was my 4th or 5th late night ride, and it's always cool. The
Bubba thing I figured out that it was folks who had wandered down from
some late night wedding reception further up the canyon. Probably
nothing to worry about but I wasn't gonna stick around to test that
    theory.

Cool. I've got some borrowed lights at the moment too. I've been drafted
into a 24 Hr. race team (single speed) and will be trying the lights out
    this week in preparation.
The only other night riding I've done is for full moons and I usually
turn the lights off for those.
Night skiing is another great time, especially under a bright moon.

I've done the full moon rides, and they're always a blast. This was a
dim moon, and a dim light, so the technical features here and there on
the trail were a major challenge. I take for granted how much
orientation we get from the horizon, our periphery, the ability to see
with depth perception... that's all gone at night, especially with low
    light...

When I rode the snow and a full moon, I practically needed sunglasses!
    Cool stuff.
