RR: Skiddaw (short)

We had already decided to 'improve' the route before we even set off, a large road section could be broken up by a couple of miles of bridalway. We declined to take a detour to the top of Skiddaw itself, it looked like it would involve a fair bit of pushing (does it Pete? anyone?) and we were pretty soaked due to some higher than normal river crossings. Going to have to get the map out to see how to link this section up with other cycle friendly paths without lots of road work. Steve.

Which side did you start from Steve? Bassenthwaite? Was walking Skiddaw last
week, we chose the sheep trail climb on Dodd Wood side, which turned out to
be a mistake in the servere conditions.. only made it to top of Carl
Side/Longside Edge, the storms were big. I did wonder whether there was any
decent biking to be had on the other side of Skiddaw, didn't see anything
suitable on the south side.

We parked up in Dodd wood actually, then headed up the A591, turned off down
a bridleway where we got lost and ended up on cockup, made it back onto the
road and then onto the bridleway past whitewater dash waterfall and onto
Skiddaw house. Took the bridleway straight on around the edge of Lonscale
Fell, this is where you can turn off up to Skiddaw. The descent from skiddaw
house was superb, especially the technical bits on the edge of Lonscale. I
don't think there is much on the south side which is why we did quite a bit
on the road in order to make a loop, we talked about riding it both ways
instead which would be the alternative.

We were getting increasingly p*ssed off as we were expecting to see a road
any minute and couldn't see any sign of it, after having a proper look at
the map and the surrounding contours confirmed we were way off. The
realisation that we had ended up on a fell called 'cockup' just seemed
surreal (does 'cockup' translate to US speak?). At least we avoided 'great
cockup' which was on the other side of the valley.

It wasn't vertical, just steep, a bit like the path on the vid where the
bloke goes tumbling off the side - forgotten his name.
