RR: Quick and close to home

nice pics! The look north is now my desktop background. Although I
wonder about your orientation from the flower picture. . . {:-)

The photos are from a couple thousand feet higher than town, but there's
no tulips up there anyway.

Bah, we're already at stage 3 fire restrictions with closures in the
Cibola Forest starting Friday. I'll have to do some traveling to get
in some rides. Your area's on the short list.

My quick and close to home ride is on and around the Desert Classic
trail on South Mountain park in Phoenix. This morning I ride 3 miles to
reach the trail, 14 miles on rolling singletrack with a total of 1400
feet of climbing. Breakfast is an interlude above the crowds on a
powerline service road watching the hummingbirds and listening to the
distanct awakening of the machine.

The Saguaro are in full bloom, with their large white flowers wide open
facing the morning sun. Often I hear a coyote family, but not today. I
see lots of quail and rabbits. Very few people are out and about at
dawn,

I cross paths twice with the fastest trail runner I've ever seen -- a
happy man with a broad smile and hearty greeting. He runs with an easy
stride, like one of those Kenyan marathon winners. His footsteps are
almost silent, even on the rocky, sandy trail.

Life is good. Today is predicted to be our first 100 degree day of a
long, hot summer. This morning there are still pockets of cool air in
the dry washes.

How high on south mountain do you have to go to get above the smog?

if you're on the South side, not much smog.......Now if you're on the North
side then about 1500 feet.

There wasn't any smog yesterday morning. But a couple weeks ago, when I
hiked up the Corona Loma trail on the South Side of the mountain, I
definitely noticed that the sky became much bluer somewhere around the
1500 feet mentioned above.

The air quality is definitely better early in the morning around here
-- there are way too many cars out there. I didn't mention my rush-hour
ride back home -- when I crossed the I-10 about 7:30 all four lanes
headed into Phoenix were backed up with about a 15 mph speed on the
road.

Overall, I still really like living here in the south part of Tempe. I
hardly missed the winter except for the one day when we had snow on the
peaks and I though that I should be out skiing.

It's way too hot over there for me, even if it weren't for all the
people and cars. I sure would miss good skiing too. Yep, that settles
