  1. My cycling usually consists of the commute into and out of town. Today I
found myself in the position of being able to go for a ride just for the
    fun of it.

I knew that the local CTC usually did a Sunday run, so I checked the
website and found that this only took place on the 3rd Sunday of the
month. Never mind, I had a look at the Spokes website and there was a
link to a group I had not heard of before who have a ride on the last
Sunday of the month called "TryCycling in Edinburgh". Their aim is to
encourage people onto bikes and consequently the rides are easy and relaxed.

I could try to describe the ride in detail, but it has been better said
on the website for the ride than I can do justice to it.

I would like to add that the ride along the Water of Leith was
fantastic, I never knew that this existed in the heart of the city.

The pace was very slow as the range of abilities was from novice upwards
and there was one family there in a Thorn tandem with mother driving,
7(ish)yr old son as stoker with adjustable length cranks and 3(ish)yr
old daughter in a child seat. Effectively the mum was doing all the work.

I probably cycled further than the ride length to both get to the ride
and to get home, but it was nice to just breeze along without worrying
about getting to work on time of having to get home to pick the girls up
    from school.

I do have one question for the group though, one of the organisers is
also involved with the Edinburgh Bicycle Film Festival[1] and I
commented on the short Dutch cartoon film that was linked to here
recently. I promised to pass her the URL so she could investigate for
inclusion in next year, but I can't find it, has anyone got it to hand?

    Sequi Bonum Non Time

At first there was nothing. Then God said 'Let there be light!'
Then there was still nothing. But you could see it.

I live in Balerno so have quite often cycled on the top half of the
walkway, but once decided to do the whole lot Balerno to Leith (and back
again) in a oner, expected the first half, Balerno to Leith, would be
easier than the second half as this first half was nominaly down hill
whilst the second half would be nominally uphill (if 600' in 8 miles can
be considered a hill) but I did the whole thing at such a pace that the
whole thing was a breeze and seemed to require no effort . Have to
agree with you that it is very peaceful and beautiful especially when
you realise that most of it is in the centre of the city, it is
especially surprisingly quite around the Dean/Dean bridge area which is
around (below) the sort of westend/stockbridge area.

Just had a thought it's even worse, that 8 miles should be 11.
Mind you it's following a water course so all (most?) of the height
loss/gain is in the first couple of miles the river tends to be calmer
(less height change) in it's final miles.

That pace may have had more than nothing to do with the amount of
pedestrians and dog walkers on this mixed use trail. If I had wanted to
do it as a serious transport thing, rather than something to do on a
sunny Sunday instead of just vegging in the garden, would have stuck to
    roads.
