  1. We both haven't been on a ride in over 2 months. Jim has had a problem with
a pinched nerve and tendons in his neck and shoulder that have prevented him
from riding and he recently completed a stint of physical therapy which
seemed to help. I've been trying to get over an intestinal problem that has
hounded me for nearly 3 months and a shoulder injury also which I will be
    starting physical therapy to correct.

We had not been to Bethpage in well over that time that we have been out of
riding but we found out from several other riders that the park was a
complete mess and torn up. Apparently, there was garbage everywhere in the
park and plenty of it and jumpers had been illegally building jump spots
right in the middle of the xc trails and causing the xc riders to go around
those sections and widening the trails.

Jim and I had been planning to take an easy toodle ride in the park now that
we were feeling better. We were not going to ride any of the technical
sections nor include any climbing, mostly just the fireroads. We brought
    along our SS's.

We arranged to meet up with several people after our ride in order to begin
the cleaning up process. FlyingSquirrel was officially handed the task of
leveling off and knocking down the jumps during the week and trying to find
out who is responsible for building these monstrosities in the middle of the
    xc trails in the park.

We met up with Frankie Froglegs, DeMack and Cory in the parking lot after
their ride was complete. We agreed to focus and start the job in the
Brickyard section of the park. DeMack and Cory drove their trucks and
equipment to the other end of the park near the entrance to the Brickyard.
Frankie, Jim and I rode to the section to meet up with them. We had packed
some garbage bags in our camelbak's in order to begin the garbage cleanup.

We arrives at the section to find a clusterfuck of a mess. The whole section
of trail was covered in garbage. Shopping carts, bottles, cans, wooden
planks, crackpipes, bongs, broken plastic chairs, broken glass,
unrecognizable pieces of metal, a park bench from the golf course and
various other piles of junk were strewn all over the trail. We couldn't
believe it. The place had gone to hell. We didn't know where to start. We
all stood there and planned how to attack the mess. Jim, Frankie and I
started with the garbage collection by picking up all the bottles, cans and
smaller stuff. DeMack and Cory moved the larger items and piled them up into
    a corner to be removed.

We did as much as we could to make the place rideable and clean. We'll be
going in there to clean various other sections of the park that are also in
    the same mess.

The ride that Jim and I did was a short and easy one...but it was our first
ride in a long time, it was better than nothing. Hopefully, this is the
start of us getting back into the groove...yup, its good to be back on 2
    wheels...

You really need to inform the parks commission. Search around until you
find someone who cares. Every commission has at least one person who
doesn't just work for the money. We are lucky in Philadelphia to have
someone on the Fairmont Parks Commission who really cares about the
state of Wissahickon park. He even comes out on Saturday off the job to
    help with trail maintenance.

I only wish... The park director _Hates_ us...
It all stems from the fact that we and the local hiking interest got enough support to stop the state from taking the few remaining acres of woods and turning it into a 6th golf course... The hikers have poitical pull so they are basically left alone. We mtber's are using a don't ask don't tell on the property... Which means we are allowed to ride there but any damge done by equestrians, hikers, or doofs smoking weed, drinking beers and burning stuff in the woods gets blamed on mtbers. Couple this with idiots building obvious stunts on the trails makes us the "wheeled locusts".
Those of us who care to manage things get turned away. We have a great relationship with other land managers but this one just hates us.
Also the state doesn't have workers for this park... I just heard this one and I amazed... They call in sanitation workers and they basically run in there with a bulldozer and just flatten anything they deem a problem... So I am afraid to call as a citizen in this case as I may be shooting us in the foot...
The local MTB club is aware of it but caught up in the whole thing...
Rather than get the state involved we have been going in... and illegally cleaning trash and fixing problems...
I say illegal because we have no permission from the land manager to be there...
I have already been in there with a trash bag and been told by park people I should desist.

Wow, that stinks! I know what it's like to lose land to a golf course.
It happened to us at Mercer County Park.

Is your local MTB club an IMBA affiliate? Have they tried getting the
IMBAsils involved? They worked with our local preservation society at
Wiss and are now involved in regenerating the trail system through a
third party maintenance organization. I know your on Long Island and
not in the city so you probably have to deal with a much "stuffier"
goverment. It sounds like you are going to need a tough ground roots
    effort. Good luck.

it happens. I was that way for just over a week and then got back on my
bike. it felt more foreign than usual, yet still familiar (analogies
abound). I was glad to get back on and ride, 'twas mostly time
    constraints holding me back.

I always have this strange desire to tweak my bike more after I haven't
ridden it in a while, I don't know why...but managed to resist doing too
much tinkering. probably a good thing, why mess with what works.

But how nicely are those wheels dialed in now? I know mine are after 8
    weeks without riding.

Glad to hear the mortal coils are coming along. Too bad about
Bethpage. This is what happens when your imperious shadows aren't cast
on the area for a while. All the goobers move in. It would be
interesting to consider that mtb'ers might actually deter
bottle-smashing jackasses. We sneak up pretty quickly....
I can't believe rangers are telling you guys to 'desist' your cleanup
    efforts. It's just baffling.
I'm heading to NJ this weekend for the Rutgers homecoming game. Plan
to hit Hartshorne, probably literally. Haven't been on the mtb much
lately and I've been eating like I'm going into hibernation in a few
    weeks.
