Carla and I have been riding Calverton quite a bit on the Single Speeds... It's a relativly flat, tight twisty bit of woods... Perfect for single gear fun... There are a couple of hills thrown in... One section is named Roller Coaster and it is some quick climbs followed by some fun desents... No problem for either of us. One other hill called Hillside drive that is a fun standing run... nothing terrible... The one climb that has beaten us both is coming out of the Scuttle Hole... A valley that marks the halfway point of the ride... Going into the valley is fun and fast. When the climb begins in earnest there are a couple of quick moves you need to make and while keep your momentum up you have to get over 2 deep grade dips... all while climbing... Neither of us have made it all the way up... it's either the moves at the bottom, the grade dips or someone on the trail that scuttle all of our attempts to get up it... This past Sunday I made a break entering the valley.. I was determined to make it up this time.. I kept all the momentum I could muster while sitting made the two moves (quick right, 5 feet quick left) and started up the hill... I hit the first grade dip and vaulted out of my saddle and began pumping... I got straight up and stopped at the top. Some guy on a GF was standing there all happy for me... telling me that this was a great hill... all you need to do was downshift and keep your momentum up... I couldn't breath... I just stood there pointing at my bike... No... pant pant pant... no.... pant pant pant derailuer...pant pant... He just stood there looking at me then the bike blankly... Carla arrived... and he looked blankly at Carla's bike then her... then blankly back to me and told us we were crazy. smiled and rode off...
Later as we were finishing the ride we both relized that we hadn't been on a geared bike since the fall of last year....
I think of all the rides we did on the SS.. this one gave me the most satisfaction.. I just wonder what is going to happen when we hit some real hills!?!?!!!!

As I was reading that I had a flash-back to the time that I first made it up "Rog's Purgatory" (which most of you would likely call "coasting uphill"😉 without having to dismount. Same kinda feeling.
