I had an interesting 100km ride yesterday on the Birdwell Wheelers BP. A mate tagged along and we managed to go off route three times. We missed a roundabout exit which cost us a few kilometers as we back tracked. Someone had nicked a road sign to Fishlake which meant that we did a longer route to get to the aforementioned place then the piece de resistance - in an attempt to unravel an ambiguity in the route notes, we made the mistake of asking some locals who directed me and my oppo to a bridle path that was the most direct route to where we wanted to be. The pair that we asked had a long conversation with us and argued with each other while delivering eight or nine variants of the 'fool proof and simple route'....we should have spotted the signs of the idiot genes see smiled to readily and his eyes were too close together.....the bridle path deteriorated into a rutted brambled quagmire. While it was passable for a rider on a horse it was a bit of a struggle until we got on to the disused railway, crossed an electrified twin track main line between Wakefield and Doncaster - don't panic we obeyed the sign - 'cyclists dismount', 'horseriders dismount' and we stopped looked and listened before crossing. Continued along a disused railway, skirted a bog and rode along an earthworks before reaching a point 2km from where we'd asked advice and 5-6km by the 'short cut'. Of course we didn't know this at the time until we passed a signpost further along the A19 pointing to the village where we'd asked advice. We were similarly disorientated by advice on how to get to Brodsworth....though there was an upside here I discovered a steam museum at Markham Main which I intend to visit at Easter.
I'm amazed that the bit of South Yorkshire that we rode through wasn't filled with hostels for the lost and seriously bewildered as the locals didn't seem to know where they lived and I have little faith in their ability to find their way home....
I wish I'd brought a map with me on the ride .......
Anyway it was a memorable way to rack up my 10th 100km BP. I can laugh at the misadventures now but I was feeling a tad irate at the time.

I missed a turn somewhere near Fishlake[1] during the Spurn Head 400 last year, but fortunately encountered what must have been the only Local with a working knowledge of the geography of the area :-)

Brave man to Audax without one 🙂
I normally have a map with me but couldn't lay my hands on the OS map I bought specifically for last year's ride. Off course it revealed itself to me when i got back home.....
I've only had to refer to a map twice in thirty rides so perhaps I was lulled into a false sense of security.
Having referred to the OS map of the 'black hole' that robbed my of several miles, I'm gobsmacked by the uselessness of the instructions that we were given by the local numpties.....
The extra miles will add to the calorie burn as part of my campaign to shed enough weight to take on some AAA events this year.

The extra weight being caused by an excess of AAA events last year ?
(Armchair Audax Award, as per Audax mag a few issues back)
I hardly call:
16 x 100km BPs 1 x 120km BP 1 x 170km BP 1 x 200km BR 1 x W2W unsupported cycle camping coast to coast crossing 1 x JOGLE unsupported cycle camping tour
an inactive 2006!
It's simply a case of too many pies and peas and curries and chocolate and fish and chips and other tasty things 8-)
Still, I've dropped 1/2 stone over the past three weeks just six and a half to go and I'll have a break at fifteen stone :-)
I'm quite happy with my resting pulse at 48 bpm and a commensurately low blood pressure.

Your mileage is vastly more than mine.

I'm not offended - love the alternative description for AAA.
