It was a sunny blue day when we arrived at Jim Thorpe, PA. The MTB
mecca of PA would again turn out to be some of the best riding in
months. We head up to Broad Mountain and prepare to set sail.

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2260.jpg

We ride down the road a bit to the trailhead and we are on our way to
find the ultimate fishing hole. 😉

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2263.jpg

The trail starts out smooth as if to give everyone a false sense of
    security.

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2264.jpg

So why is this the best trail in Jim Thorpe and maybe the tri-state
    area? This is why...

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2266.jpg

Mile and miles of singletrack bliss loaded with beautiful big babyheads
the entire way! Riding the pig bike made this easy. It's amazing how
big plush travel just soaks it up. With a little speed to carry you
over, there's very little that can't be ridden. And we ride and ride
with the smiles beaming across our faces.

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2269.jpg

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2270.jpg

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2271.jpg

As is customary, we stop to fix Jay's mecanical. Of course I have to
open my mouth and tout the virtues of SRAM derailleurs as I normally do
with the club and on the Internet. Little did I know it would come back
to haunt me as you will see later.

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2272.jpg

Problems fixed we head out for some more rocky fun.

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2277.jpg

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2278.jpg

All is well with the Ellsworth"less" for now. But what evil lurks
    beyond the famous toilet?

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2279.jpg

The bugs were buzzing pretty good from all the wet weather we've had,
so we stop to test a theory. We're told that the gnats will migrate to
the highest part of your body and leave your face alone. So Jeff raises
his fist above his head. Do you see any gnats? I don't, but they were
happily eating the rest of my body!

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2281.jpg

After doing some impromptu trail maintenance (someone decided to cover
the trail in multiple places with branches) and getting lost we finally
    stop for a bathroom break.

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2284.jpg

This is where all hell breaks lose. We start heading up the loop out of
the woods. Again, there is rocky wonderment everywhere and I'm clearing
them all even on the uphill. I get up from the saddle to get a little
more torque the sound of the chain mashing against everyhing fills the
air as I come to a complete stop. I figure WTF, the chain came loose.
Nope. Ok, I see the drailleur just hanging and figure I busted my
hanger. Then upon close inspection, I find this:

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2285.jpg

    http://www.schnauzers.ws/public/images_upload/IMG_2286.jpg

We're not talking an X.0 here. This is an X.9, the beafier one. You'd
think I weight 220 pounds and was riding in thebig ring! At 145 pounds
without even hitting a rock, this should not happen. Especially when the
derailleur is three months old and ridden twice (I don't use the pig rig
    much anymore).

Three mile trek out on foot to the fire road and I was lucky Jay W.
braved the low branches and scrathes to his Titan (nice truck) to come
and pick me up, sparing me another two miles. So, it was fun while it
lasted. SRAM will get the derailleur and a nasty letter FedExed this
week. I think it's just a failure in QC, I am still an SRAM fan.

Bummer, sorry to hear that about the SRAM.

Why did you not turn it into a singlespeed and ride out?

  3. What happened to the Sram, did it snap just above the
spring where its open? I've heard of this one from a riding LBS owner
and friend. I've had no problem with my two X-9s. But heres one for you
a few months ago I traded my Proflex 856 for 2 Dutch 3 speeds. Well the
new owner of the 856 loves it but theres one problem the Generation X
Front derailleur keeps rubbing chain. Come to find out its his 40 or
better pounds over mine doing it. So he needs a front derailleur
thats smaller like the Shimano XT 736 that the Sram replaced. I never
had a problem with the Gen X at 208 lbs. With that weight of his the
swingarm is coming up and hitting and the X-9 and swinging it out of
adjustment. By the way great pics.

  4. I see now at the bolt. You could have got the chain
tool out and shortened the chain and took what was left of the
derailleur off and rode it back to the car.

Why did you not turn it into a singlespeed and ride out?

Never works with full suspension (well, never worked for me)because of
the Romic bobbing. We had the "conversion" man himself on the ride.
He's converted many a bike in the past including a crashed roadie racer
at the US Pro in Philly last year. Without a chain tensioner, it
    doesn't work for very long.

Yeh, it literally snammped where the bolt goes into the hanger.
Everyone was saying that you could get a breakaway bolt for Shimano, but
that would not have solved this problem. I have never seen anything
like it. Look at it closely (although I am no structural engineer), it
looks like the cooling process after the molding went to fast. The
break is not smooth and it's almost powedery like.

I am only 145 pounds so I do not think it's a weight issue.

It didn't work the last time I did it on this bike. The Romic just bobs
too much and I'd be stopping every ten feet to put the chain back on.

  8. When I picked up the Schwinn Probe 3 years ago the
Shimano DX rear derailleur was snapped just south of the bolt on the
knuckle. It went from a 15 speed to a 21 speed and finally to a 24
speed. I keept it Shimano, STX RC with a Sram Neos front derailleur.
Sram MRX left and SRT 400 right shifters. Its one of my 3 commuters.
Others are a GT LTS Team and a GT hybred all Sram.

Hi, could you please explain to me how weight has any effect on this? I'm
genuinly interested as I previously didn't think this could be an issue.

I have similar problems with my front derailler and this might have
    something to do with it..

  13. With the Sram Generation X front derailleur clearance
isn't much. The swingarm on the Proflex 856 plus a super large heavy
person and bang the swingarm meets derailleur. Now on the Proflex 2000
different swingarm and derailleur is under swingarm no problem. Now with
a Shimano XT FD 736 fromt deralleur the swingarm won't reach the

Just went out priority mail today. I sent it to the President of SRAM
in Chicago with tracking along with a nice letter of my discontent.

At the very least they better send me another X.9

I had on old 9.0 that I put on for now. It's nowhere near as smooth
