Short track is a special kind of mtb race, sort of like criterium
but on mountain bikes. You might want a beginner XC race.

I know (sort of) what short track is. I've done some clinics on a
short track course. I was just asking if there are beginner XC races
shorter than 19 miles! That's a lot for me!

the only I did was 9 miles... 3 3 mile laps.

That's a pretty typical XC length, maybe slightly longer than usual.
Crested Butte has a community race series with courses typically
running about 12 Miles if you want someting a little shorter. Those
are casual with pizza and beer afterwards and all ability levels are
welcome. Entry is $12 this year.

    www.skicb.com has a schedule if you're interested.

I'm very interested, but there's no way I can take enough time to get to
CB on a weekday in August =/

    Perhaps next year ...

I hate multi-lap races. I'd much rather do one long lap.

This is more of a "spend a week with my ailing grandmother whom I
haven't seen in 16 years" kind of thing. I don't anticipate doing
anything that doesn't involve my grandmother.

I'm sure Omma drinks beer... Get a bike, have someone drive her to the
top of the hill and ride up and meet her. It's not like we're in the
wilderness here... Most of my rides have a kleine pause in the middle
    for a hefe weizen.

Thueringen, ex-East Germany ... a small town called Sitzendorf.

Seriously, though, her health isn't that great, and she's not a huge fan
    of going and doing stuff (probably thanks to years of east german life;
it doesn't make you younger, that's for sure).

I appreciate the ideas, but I'm not planning on any riding.
