RR: A little Riding

tomorrow? (O geez, I've got a million things going on.) How's the
morning, says I? no good, says he. O well, 330 it is, but doubt

So we meet at CB Park, its overcast about 40 degrees, and perfect.
We're grinning like baboons, when a guy shows up who saw my invite post
on mtbr-Idaho. Can he join us? you bet! Just don't complain if you
have to wait on climbs since I'll be dragging a 38lb freeride bike up.
My philosophy on riding these pigs up high to get the downhill payoff:
I'm payin for dinner, bought the corsage, danced a few times, then I
get to take her to the back seat. and then we r000cckkk!

So we ride up Uncle Stan's, and I'm not really happy going from my 24lb
singlespeed to this freeride beast, but I make it up. See our old
buddy, NPSquared arrive at top. He got his name from his motto, "No
pain, no pain." He's really strong now, so I'd better lay off the
jokes.

Nels on a Litespeed hardtail sets the pace, and we're booking. The
sandy trails are damp, but rideable. We cut off Crestline to
Sidwinder, a fairly stout hombre that simply winds its way up the
mountain, each turn and climb more steep than the last. Da Machine & I
stop to adjust stuff and catch our breath at one point, then push on to
the summit. I set the camera on automatic, and you can see the shot of
all three of us.

We're way up where you can see at least 20 miles in 3 directions.
ringing the valley were dark rain clouds, and thunder boomed. So we
dropped the seats determined to beat the rain down.

We laughed, we cried, we were airborne! Yeehhaaaah! jumping the water
bars, railing the turns faster than we ever had! Shouting like kids at
let out of school at the end of the year.

I'm singing "it's only rock and roll, but I like it," in my best
big-lipped guy imitation. Steve da machine joins in and we're grooving
fast in harmony, hitting doubles and triples, hoppin and poppin in
style with a smile.

We made it to happy hour where we were treated to free samples of some
new brew introduction that made it all even that much more groovy,
dood.

Thanks, Bill. You can appreciate the cognitive and physical dissonance of
exchanging my light, rigid SS for a huge fr pig. The hills were a new
experience, both ways. Never had to climb in granny/granny before then, and
never caught so much air with so much confidence, either. Good fun for a
change.

So what's the deal with the MC rig? A loaner from Dirt
Dart? Was that a a 'Zen'?

I liked the action of Steve's Zen when I rode it around a
bit in McCall. It had hardly any pedal bob, but soaked up
the bumps nicely. However a new bike is definitely not in
the budget for a while.

Tomorrow I'm going to hit the ski hill with my wife and then
hopefully that will free up some SSing time this weekend.
It's awful warm...

Most the time I rode his partner's MC Fury, more of a freeride, light dh
rig. Climbed like a dead pig, but boy was it sweet ripping down Sidewinder,
Crestline and Kestrel... The Zen is kind of a perfect bike. Light, good
geometry, good suspension, nice handling.

Be a while for me too. Just got a booming new home theater on line (jeez
louieez, you have to be an electrical engineer to get them things going
right--I might give you a call) but the tv sounds awesome, so I can spin to
the mtb dvds in much better surround sound. Maybe the winter's too long.
Kinda feels like it, what with lousy snow, lousy trails, not even drinking
much beer....
