LOL, depends what you mean by unpleasant. There are a bumber of small
size lanes, but they are mainly straight with 90 degree bends then
straights again. The route below follows the river pretty much as close
as it can, so is probably the least unpleasant, and is a route I have
done in the past, though we didn't go into <shudder> Goole </shudder>

I live close by, that side of Doncaster anyway, so I know most of the
roads round there, but couldn't recite numbers etc, I just know them
when I see them whilst out .. 😉

I therefore used my 'Cycling Setup' Autoroute, with speeds of 20, 15 and
10 with Motorways and Major roads being disliked and using the shortest
route option. Even with Motorways set to dislike, the shortest route is
easily using the motorway, by quite a long distance, hence I added some
judicious 'Avoid Area' squares.

After crossing the bridge heading south, as you would if coming from
South Cave, then get onto the A1077 Ferriby road, I don't know how you
would do this though, having never done it.

Forgot to ask about a route to the Bridge from South Cave

I don't ususally cross the river so have little experience over 'that
side' .. but following the same setup with Autoroute ..

Thanks Paul, its all helpful. Its been a long time since I last cycled
over the Humber Bridge, is there a bike track on each side ? Whats the
best side to use bearing in mind I'll be approaching from the west and
going west once I get to the Lincolnshire side of the river.

over the Humber Bridge, is there a bike track on each side ? Whats the
best side to use bearing in mind I'll be approaching from the west and
going west once I get to the Lincolnshire side of the river.

I've never cycled across, sorry. Personally I'd pass on the leeward
side, whichever way the wind's blowing .. 😉

I have the same problem coming in from the west and you really only have two
choices from South Cave. You can head over the Wolds as shown here:

Or there is a flat route along the river bank, but you need to be able to
cope with walking your bike along the foreshore between Brough and North
Ferriby.

You can ride to Brough from South Cave, walk along the foreshore to Ferriby
and then ride along a chalk track direct to the bridge. This gets rid of the
hills.

The route to Goole from the bridge is more straightforward. You *have* to
cross the Trent at Gunness (unless you want to go to Gainsborough and that's
too ghastly to contemplate!)

When are you planning on doing it? I might be able to act as a pilot, but

Crossing on the west side is easier, but sometimes one of the compulsory
cycle paths is closed for maintenance access. A sign on the approach path
will say if either of the tracks is closed. Even if you have to use the east
track it's no big deal as at the south end you simply ride under the bridge
to meet the end of the west track anyway.

Here is the west path - It's not as bad as I made out.

Thanks Simon, did you generate and post those maps especially for me ?
I have not downloaded them yet so if possible please leave them up for a
few more days. I am planning this ride sometime in early March then
almost certainly again on 2nd or 3rd April. The first time I do it I
will probably be alone so I'd be glad of the company if you can make it.
You are welcome to meet us the second time too of course. After reading
your messages on here over the years and looking at your websites I feel
like I know you so its about time we met in person. If you can find a
cafe I'll buy you a cup of tea, maybe meet me at Redbeck, take me to the
Bridge and see me on my way, give it some thought. I am not sure of my
return route yet but I talked about returning to Goole to cross the
river and head directly home thorugh Knottingley as I know this route.

Like I said I have ridden over the bridge before. Back in 1991 I met a
guy from Barton (met him on a cross channel ferry and cycled around
Normandy with him), stayed with him for the weekend. We cycled over the
Bridge and back. Now I reckon I can do a route from Morley which will be
about 120 miles, I may plan to return via a few stations in case my
estimates are wildly out and time is getting on.

Looking at your photos, I don't think I'll be clumping over the
foreshore with my Look cleats !!!!I If its a good weekend I'll be on
the Merckx, it doesn't do off road of any kind.

Redbeck is at Boothferry Bridge, just to the east of the bridge. I'll
determine a date, it'll be either a Saturday or Sunday in March before
the 19th of March. (I am doing a 200km in Cheshire on the 20th and I
want to do 2 200s in March)

What ? You did 100miles to Pickering and back last year. You are not

Yes, you're right - I'm wimping out (I knew there'd be a drawback to putting
personal stores on the web ;-). Boothferry Bridge will be fine. I haven't
got a mobile, so I'll borrow our lass's to find out how far off you (or I)
