Some thoughts only I’m not up with this in any detail anymore, perhaps I shouldn’t be making pronouncements.
1) how is running not power oriented?
I think is what shapes my thinking is the comparison of the stye of race. The standard ‘distance’ race we were training for was 20 km with the possibility of up to 500 vertical meters over the course. They tend to undulate so that one goes through lots of transitions from down to up requiring lost of short power efforts cary speed into a hill and to get your body up and over the next 5 or 10 metres then to look for recovery on the next down.
You also then mix in things like holding a relatively isometric crouched position in steep downs or the need for leg strength to skate through corners at the bottom of a fast hill dealing with the compression that your weight is putting into your legs.
So It’s a different sort of power to running a 20km flatish course.
The flat isn’t much good to train this so it was about intervals against a slope either on blades/roller skis or by a diagonal hop or long hills (Marysville to Lake Mt, Harietville to Mt St Bernard).
(2) how is kick at full extension more like cycling than like running?
I’m probably wrong about this. Perhaps I’m thinking that the way you push though the bottom of a pedal stroke or keep applying power out to the end of a skating kick is different from how a running leg loses contact with the ground and trails into the air and possibly never quite straightens out. But then again, skating or cycling this happens with the foot under a bent body, and running it happens with the foot behind the body.
Skating its happening with a fixed ankle kicking out through the ball and heel, cycling or running its out through the ball and the ankle has more potential mobility, but I don’t know how that mobility is being utilised.
