  1. I've just replaced the chain on my Thorn Raven (Rohloff geared), with a
spare I had for the MTB, a Sram pc99 (11/128"😉. Afterwards (of course)
I read the manual and found out I should have used a 8-speed chain
(3/32"😉. It seems to run perfectly, so does anyone know if the missing
1/128" is critical? Will I be wearing the sprockets/chainrings at an
    extra rate?
    thanks.

It won't make any difference. The only thing that it will cause is a
small void in your wallet where the extra cost of the narrower chain
    was extracted.

Thanks, yeah I know what you mean about the wallet, but you're sitting
on the garage floor, sad looking chain hanging off your bike, and a
nice shiney one in a box: what are you gonna do?

I don't know about the chain but I wanted to ask you about your bike.

I'm considering adding a Rohloff hub to my commuter bike or perhaps even
replacing it with a new Rohloff equipped bike for commuting. How are you
using your Thorn Raven? Are you happy with the Rohloff? Is it worth it?

I've estimated the upgrade to my bike at:

INTERNAL GEAR HUB: Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 XC, polished aluminum, 16 tooth
sprocket, twist shifter, Torque arm with holder, Chain tensioner. Cables
with holders, 30 ml gear oil - $999.95
    RIM: Mavic A719, 32 hole - $64.95
    SPOKES: $0.80 x 32 - $25.60
    LABOR FOR WHEEL BUILD: $40.00
CRANKSET: Stronglight impact Rohloff, 48T, 2 chain protector rings -
    $108.38
BOTTOM BRACKET: Stronglight 118 mm JP 400 BB (conical square), BSC
    hreads - $18.06
    CHAIN: RAM/Sachs/Sedis PC-7X - $19.95
    BRAKE LEVERS: Shimano XT brake levers, M-739 $69.79 x 2 - $139.58

    TOTAL: $1,416.47

This kind of gave me sticker shock. Seems like a lot of money to get rid of
    my derailleurs.

Rohloff hubs are expensive, noisy, less efficient, and heavy.

I recently bought my second one.

Dunno about just commuting - especially if it's on pavement.

For me the strong points are:
    ------------------------------
    - Any gear any time. Sudden stop in 10th gear? No prob, just
downshift while stopped. Also, on long hills it's nice to
roll up 4-5 gears just to get out of the saddle for a few min
and then roll back down. I used to do that with a der too,
buy always in the spirit of "Geeze, I sure hope I don't miss
a shift and take that saddle horn up my butt....again..."

    - No trashed ders on stumps/stones

    - No problems with vines/grass in the der

    - No taco'd cluster gears.

    - Simplicity. I don't have any brain cells to spare and
it's nice not having to keep track of which front ring I'm on.

    - Cheap chains. SRAM PC-48s do the job just fine. $6.00 on sale.

For road commuting use, I'd think the downsides are:
    ----------------------------------------------------
    - Even gear spacing. Stronger riders than me might want tighter
gearing at the top and wider at the bottom.

    - Weight. It added almost exactly two pounds to each of my bikes.

    - Resale Value. Even if your bike looks like a beater, somebody
whose business is stealing would probably see a quick $400-500
    sitting in that rear wheel.

My biggest complaint is I didn't buy it four years (and about 3
group-sets) ago. Sure, the price is high, but as mine replaces a car,
it'd be cheap and twice the price.
My commute is about 20miles/day with a lot of steep ups and downs,
towing a child trailer and two kids (trailer all-up loading is about
100lb); so I'm not too bothered about top-end performance (even on the
downs I don't to go more than 30mph with the trailer).

For simplicity, the Thorn (or another bespoke Rohloff frame) is ideal,
you can pop wheels in and out very quickly, the eccentric BB makes
chain tensioning easy. Thorn have added braze-ons for neat cable
routing. Added to this, I have Magura HS33 rim brakes and a SON
hub-dynamo. The bike is quite heavy, very solid and realiable, and the
26" wheels seem very strong. All in, a perfect commuter (but not one
I'd leave out on the street).

Bottom line: it's worth it if cycling is part of your daily life, and
you don't want to spend evenings fiddling with mechs & chains - or if
your a rich bar steward who doesn't mind shelling out for some fine
    engineering...

I'd specify an enclosed chain case rather than the protector rings,
such as from Nöll - add another $100 (and I will, someday soon)

I paid about that for the whole bike, ready to ride, with the
Rohloff-specific frame. I guess you're not anywhere near St. John St.
Cycles, but I'm sure they'd stick in the mail for you... (Sheldon Brown
seems to have been able to get his hands on one).
