Swapped bikes with a friend yesterday and did about five miles on his mountain bike.
Aluminum frame, slicks, don't know the brand, he said it cost about $3000. It is just a little heavier than my Walmart bike, 34lbs to 38lbs. It has a generator hub, battery pack, a small rear bag, lights and siren. It has fancy shifters compared to mine, took a little getting used to.
I really don't see or feel that much difference. His does shift a little better, but mine is fine. His is hard tailed and mine has full suspension, I think his seat is better but still rides a bit harsher than mine. He said mine felt strange.
I don't know much (well, make that nothing) about the MTB world... but 38 lbs for a $3k bike doesn't sound right. Is that a typo? :eek: I am kind of curious about this.
Generator hub, battery pack, lights, siren(??????). It was probably a 22 lbs bike before all this junk was added. Anyway, I think that if he paid $3000 for a hardtail MTB and did this to it, his LBS saw him coming. I'll bet they had a nice summer vacation.

It is one of the police bikes, it carries about twenty pounds of gear. He told me the weight, I did not weigh it. I have weighed mine. It has four lights on the bars and three on the back. They were done on a bid by the local shop. And yes, it is a high $$ shop.

Of course you have absolutely nothing to base that "claim" on except your "voluminous" bike knowledge and your ill-informed assumptions about how an LBS operates.
Several of the bike officers are school resource officers and ride the bikes to school. They park in the rack right next to the kids bikes. At noon time the officers lets the kids ride the bike as long as they have a helmet. They get to play with the lights and siren.
They teach bike safety and proper riding in traffic, and provide a positive attitude towards police and the job they do.
If they prevent one serious injury the money is well spent.
