But you go up to Cambridge regardless of direction.

Nope. We were in the lakes/peaks at the weekend and it was
    back down to cambridge...

    Velvet

You didn't study in the city of perspiring dreams, then?

    Nope :-)

I opted to spend that 4 years of my life getting a job and
some experience in my chose field, rather than studying 4
years, getting a bit of paper, *then* trying to get a job...

University was a valuable experience. After three years I
    had discovered:

    - My chosen profession / career was tedious.
    - I could have done much better if I'd chosen Computer
    Science.
    - It is possible to shift your body clock so far that you
    become nocturnal.

As a consequence I am now doing something I enjoy, that is
completely unrelated to my degree (Against all the odds, I
actually got one in the end!).

    I didn't get a degree, I only lasted 2 years at university
but that didn't hold me back. I'm now supervisor to 10
graduates and I've just taken on a PhD. Having said that, I
think these days I'd be lucky to get a start where I work
with just the HND that I eventually got.

Eh??? When and where did you hear that? In my day there were
lots of catholics. Dammit, I even left with one after we
both graduated - though alas that didn't last.

Were you at some college with a historic legacy of strange
    religious rules?

A bit of research shows that Oxford was opened to dissenters
in 1854 and Cambridge in 1856. However, in 1867 Rome issued
a decree forbidding RCs from attending the universities and
this was only relaxed in 1895, but even then it was only a
    concession for exceptional circumstances.

So, in relatively recent history, the ban on RCs applied
both to Oxford and Cambridge and was imposed by the RC
church authorities and not by the universities.

I suppose that the Oxford Movement and growth of Anglo-
Catholicism might have made Oxford a more comfortable and
welcoming environment for RCs in the 19th and early 20th
    centuries.

I discovered how to cook for between 1 and 12 people on a
budget and still want to eat it. I confirmed that a bike was
all I needed to get about around a moderately sized city. I
got to move to Scotland and found it suited me far better
than London, and I ended up with more outdoor hobbies than
I'd had before. There was the degree leading to job thing
    too, ultimately...

It took me a while after I moved here (Dundee) to get
used to the fact that what was usually refered to as 'the

Oh yes. 'The North' officially ends at the border, at which
    point 'The South' begins again.

As you ride westward along the A4 it changes from London
Road to Bath Road at each town centre and back to London
Road at each boundary. It just depends where you're
    looking from.

Probably forgotten in the murky past, but a rider in the
middle of a fast moving bunch trying to disentangle a bee or
a wasp from his/her hairy legs can produce spectacular
results. All the best Dan Gregory

That's the silliest reason I've ever heard. :-) I believe
the real reason is simply to show off the ripped look that
says, "Look how fit I am."

Never done it myself but I thought the reason was wind
resistance, after all two hairy legs would negate a wheel
disc? also to make it easier to apply the pungent rub (what
is it BTW?)that permeates the air at HQ's?

I'd love to have the level of fitness where the thing that
was holding me back was the drag from my leg hair! And I
suspect the smell is Deap Heat or something similar.

In my day we used to use Horse Linament (Elliman's ISTR) and
    a dose of capsicum.

Great care had to be taken if your hands then touched eyes,

The standard notice on most packets of chillis. ALWAYS
wash your hands after handling this product. Some parts of
the body should not be warmed like that!

Especially after having them as a starter in Pizza Express
and then going for a wee after (emergency trip home to apply
liberal cold shower, not me honest!)

I discovered that good chillies can actually survive several
hand washings and still "surprise". Moral of the story: If
you're paranoid about it... wear gloves.
