Lots of good info there. One point that I'm not sure was brought up was
road stability with knobbies. I ride a lot of big hills as well, and the
climb to my nearest trailhead is a 3-mile (road) uphill. I noticed on the
way back down (fast curvy road) that the knobbies would get really
squirrly on turns, and I could feel them washing out. The last thing I
want to do is crash at 35 mph on a road! Depending on how fast your hills
are, tires could be a SAFETY issue more than an efficiency issue.
Its all fireroad up there, so I really don't need big knobbies. I switched
the tires on my old bike to Michelin Rock
(http://cycleus.webmichelin.com/tires/rock.htm), and since I got the tires
on a "buy 3" special, I put the third one on a spare front rim for my new
bike. Just having a more roadworthy tire on the front helps, but having
one on both wheels works best. Of course, these will suck on any trails
that are steep, loose or technical (except maybe slickrock).
Michelin Rock tires are getting increasingly hard to find, but several
semi-road models have come out lately from various companies.
