In 1995 Fred Rompelberg of the Netherlands sets a new bicycle speed record of 166.9 mph. He was 50 years old when he set the record. (Not sure if the record still stands though).

In 1988, he wiped out at 120 mph, suffering 24 fractures in the process. The trick to attaining such speeds: Rompelberg rides in the slipstream of a lead vehicle".

Even if he was slipping, that is still one hell of a speed :eek:

well i heard and this was ages ago that teh speed was set by a cyclist in a train with no bottom so of sourse he is still pedaling but there is 0% wind.

fastest speed on flat ground without riding in the slipstream of a vehicle is probally around 80mph in a recumbant style bike(its so aero that it looks like a missle)
