I haven't bought a new road bike since 1998. I got my LeMond Zurich equipped with Shimano SPD road pedals. I use five or six year old Nike Pedali Combo shoes--a really comfortable and walkable shoe for road or mountain that I believe was discontinued a few years back. My cleats are wearing out--so are the shoes for that matter--and I haven't seen SPD road pedals in Performance, Nashbar, Colorado Cyclist or any of the local bike shops. Is the SPD road format dead? What's everybody buying these days? Is there a nice walkable pedal-cleat-shoe combination as friendly as my old SPDs and Nike Pedali Combos?

I think he means the SPD-R format, which was in fact discontinued and replaced by SPD-SL. There are still a few retailers that have the cleats in stock:

Nashbar has a road SPD pedal called the Tourmalet...give them a look. They are a one-sided SPED road pedal.Cheers,

Those pedals are very poorly built. It's worth a little extra money to get pedals that are going to last more than a few hundred miles.
