  1. Katy,

I tend to be rather introverted with new people an I don't do well with groups of new people. However, for me, the bike is an equalizer when I meet new folks. I can start conversations with strangers with relative ease when two wheels are involved.

When I started my quest to get healthy, I was flat-out ignored by other cyclists. I was a blimp with two wheels protruding from under me back then. Very little encouragement, no acknowledging waves or nods. I was as invisible as a mountain (377 pounds when I started).

Now, weighing 177-180 pounds (consistently), I get the waves, nods and conversations at stoplights. I don't put a lot of stock into their being friendships developing as I tend to consider them as shallow. I make a point of encouraging the heavy people I encounter when I ride. I make a point of striking up conversations with them to let them know that they are incredible just for getting themselves out on two wheels in pursuit of health. That is what I'd say to you, Katy if I met you on the road.
