It's fine. I have Ultegra 9 spd on my new Klien and put an XT with a 12-32 on teh back and my knees
are happy. I don't need a triple!!

Splines and spacing are the same, just one minor problem. Road and mountain derailleurs have
different angles on their slant parallelograms. The road derailleurs track the cone angle of a road
cassette better, but can clunk into the larger cogs of a mountain cassette. A mountain derailleur,
when used on a road cassette, gets farther away from the cluster than would be desirable over the
large cogs of a road cassette. The result is slower, less positive shifting in the low gears, since
the angle from the jockey pulley to the old cog isn't as steep before the shift happens. I've got a
bike set up this way, and it shifts better with a 12-27 cassette than with an 11-23.

Nope- I have a 12-32 Nashbar cassette on a Shimano 105 hub. No issues except for the roadies
laughing at me.

Never a problem for me. When you have fenders, no one laughs at your cassette.

One of my riding buddies has Time ATACs an M5 carbon lowracer like this:
