I'm after a few ideas for road cycling routes around Sheffield. The problem is that I'm not especially fit and my bike's got old fashioned gear with a 42 tooth granny ring, and Sheffield's bloody hilly. Anyone got any ideas for relatively flat routes in the area?
I live in the city centre, and I'm not terrifically unfit, but not fit enough to keep up with my mates when we're mountain biking, so need to build stamina and get rid of some belly after 2 months off the bike due to theiving scum. I'm not really interested in club rides as I tend to have free time at odd times due to being a student.

Find a local hill, find the right gears. A broad range rear block should do, even with a 42. Then ride up the hill several times a week.

Depending on what sort of chainset you have, you should be able to fit a 39 or a 38 tooth inner ring instead of the 42. This makes a reasonable difference and isn't that pricy

Blake Street! Not even remotely flat (I used to live on Boyce Street), but I can guarantee that it'll make you pretty fit, pretty fast.

I don't know that I ever found any really flat rides when I lived there. Most of the city roads go up / down, rather than along the hills. They'll get better fairly rapidly, but other than popping into a bike shop in search of a new chainring, I can't offer any suggestions.

If you wan flat, you'll have to ride around the car park at Meadow Hall. --

Abbeydale road isn't that bad a way out of Sheffield and only gets a bit steep when you head up to Totley. The advantage of getting out of Sheffield tis that it's down hill all the way back in. I used to manage with a 52/42 double and 12-26 freewheel, you just have to get into the low gears and grind out the hills, it soon becomes a lot easier :-)
Ecclesall road isn;t that bad either, nor is Manchester road, they are uphill but teh gradient isn;t that bad, they just go on for a long time :-) All I'd say is avouid Crookes and Walkley (I used to live in both places are various times, and used to hate going home from work when it was raining/snowing.

Abbeydale is probably the flattest you'll get over any distance because it follows the river.
I used to live in Beighton, and work in the centre. I was certainly a lot fitter when I had to ride up Granville Rd and City Road every night!

Seb Coe used to use one of the valley roads because it has several miles of steady low gradient. I forget which one I'm afraid, but you could try trial and error <g>.
