    Hi

    Following up on:

    I tried to drill the bolt out of the rivnut without success: the rivnut
    kept turning and I decided there was too great a chance of the drill
    diving off into the lovely soft aluminium downtube for me to continue. I
    ended up filing the lip of the rivnut off so it'd fall into the
    downtube, at least allowing me to fit a new one.

    Now I can fit a new rivnut but I have an old one rattling around inside
    the downtube. There is no opening between the downtube and BB shell and
    the hole into the headtube is too small to get the rivnut out so it
    looks like it's stuck in there forever. Any ideas what I could tip into
    the downtube to stop it rattling about? Some kind of glue (PVA?) or
    expanding stuff would do it, I suppose. I hope that when the nut is
    nestled up in the downtube/BB shell junction it'll stay put with a bit
    of help.

    I'll be more careful with my rivnuts next time 🙁

    That's just a coating isn't it? As Mark surmises some expanding foam
    filler will hold the bit in position, probably best to tip the frame
    up so the loose rivnut is at the head end of the tube and squirt a
    little filler through the hole to hold it there.

    Heat a desertspoonful grease up - OUT OF DOORS - until it's very runny,
    warm (don't heat) the frame. Pour the grease in through the rivnut hole.
    Allow to cool.

    Alternatively, mix the grease with a solvent, but it may take a while for
    the solvent to evaporate out.

    Using grease would be good because
    * it won't harm the bike
    * it's easy to get in when it's liquid
    * it's sticky and claggy at normal temperatures, and the bit will
    stick to it
    * you won't have to use much

    I wouldn't use an expand-in-place foam, because in the past I've blown
    some pretty sturdy structures apart with them. The stuff /will/ expand,
    and if it can't find a place to go it will break out. It generates
    amazing pressures.

    Or it will get loose in time, trap water in the crevice and cause severe
    corrosion.
