I completely admired his courage to not give up on his dreams. Even in the
face of many people saying it was so unrealistic, he didn't let it stop
him.

And the cancer isn't what took Grams life either. Though she was
recently diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. Her immune system was
certainly weakened but she had Osteoporosis(lumbar disc disease) thus
she had back surgery to have Harrington Rods placed in her back,( they
told ehr she would still be able to walk NOT!) thus rendering her a
paraplegic since 1999, thus causing urinary incontinence and an
inability to move her bowels, thus needing an indwelling catheter to
keep the urine off her tail bone where she had a decubitus ulcer (
bedsore)( urine really breaks down already fragile tissue) The
catheter in place thus put her at risk of having chronic bladder and
kidney infections which she got anyway way before the catheter because
that happens to paraplegics, thus causing a terrible bladder and
kidney infection. By the time they figured out what was wrong she was
in septic shock with a cold sweaty body outside but a 103 fever,
respirations of 60 and a pulse of 150+ cause of death: UROSEPSIS. Her
contaminated urine poisoned her blood. She fell into a coma and died.
We could have tried real hard to save her by intubating her, give her
heavy doses of antibiotics, and stressing her body even more but she
would not have wanted it. I did panic the day I saw her so confused
and took her to the hospital to see if it was something as simple as a
few days of antibiotics. When the docs told me what my heart already
knew, I chose to do it Grams way and the most loving way. We stopped
everything but oxygen and Morphine. I begged them to let me put her up
on 2West, the floor I spent 10 years working on. I was among friends.
She didnt have to die in a nursing home and as I promised her I was
with her when she passed. She died in no pain or distress and with
some dignity. The wonderful thing about Morphine is that the recipient
doesnt know they are having trouble breathing while taking it. Im sure
Christopher Reeve died with dignity too. He fought long and hard. He
like Gram is at peace now.

What really got to me is that to see him in his movies and then see how his
body had deteriorated and atrophied! How sad!

That was pretty quick, wasn't it. I still think he did a
lot of good in such a short time as far as research for
paralysis patients.

I have that movie. DH got it as a Christmas present for me a couple years
back.
