So today I was out there up the moors, when I saw the rust patch on the top tube has grown to an alarmingly big crack, that goes most of the way round it.
Ouch!
Make my way home very slowly, including walking the steep (downhill) bits.
Now I'm going to have to get that new bike I was planning on once I have some space. Just got a ridgeback brochure from the LBS, and might browse the 'net a bit. Since I still don't have space, it'll have to double up for middle- distance road journeys and fun on the moors.
Looks like I also have a used MTB to dispose of - unless I go mad and buy a new frame to build around. Frame is dead (unless you're a serious Igor), but it's got some decent components on.

Yes, these new-fangled aluminium frames do crack and fail, don't they? :-)
Seriously, if it's got decent parts, buy a new frame. On one will sell you a scandium alloy hardtail for £220
Obviously, there are other places you can get good frames for reasonable money.

Actually there's enough left that I'm pretty sure I wasn't in any immediate danger. But discovering the crack made me nervous, and tells me that replacement is in order.
Seriously, if it's got decent parts, buy a new frame.
Trouble is, the parts are something of a mix, ranging from originals through cheapos to those replaced in the past two years or so when I've been making enough not to make "cheap" my criterion for choice. 'Twould be a crime to abandon that beautiful chainset, but not everything is up to its standard.
It's chromoly actually, but I've updated the page to confirm...

Don't look at me - I've just acquired a nice 531 frame with canti bosses which just needs new rear dropouts and should make a nice tourer or, at a pinch, a cyclocross bike for next season. Don't think I can cope with another frame right now.
