  1. My wife's bike needs a new front wheel, 700c to take a 25-28mm tyre.
The existing wheel has a Mavic MA2 rim, but these are no longer
    available.
What does the team think would be a suitable replacement>
The 719s seem to be quite a bit wider. How about Open Pro or Open
    Sport?

    Thanks,

    Mike

I have OpenPro on my commuter, seems pretty sturdy - so far so good -
    28mm certainly not a problem.

OpenPro works well with 28mm. I doubt I would want to go much wider.

Don't use wide rims meant for fat (~37mm) hybrid tyres and then use a 28mm
    tyre.

Open Pro would be my top choice, personally.

Open Sport or MA3 - heavier and not so good with single instead of double
eyelets - but would be OK for a front wheel if important to save a few quid.

A719 would provide extra strength and be OK (though not ideal in terms of
comfort) for a 28mm tyre, but too wide for a 25mm tyre.

The Mavic website show 28mm as the narrowest tyre for the A719. That's
    what I run, no problem.

I understand very little of what's being discussed
but for some reason it's fascinating.

Are you intending to replace the entire wheel or just re-rim the
existing one? If you're looking at just a new rim you might want to
check out the Sun CR18. It's just 2mm wider than the MA2 and only
1.5mm taller in section height. You could almost certainly re-rim
    using your current spokes.

I just went through a re-rimming decision for my touring bike and
settled for a pair of Alex DM18s. These are very heavy duty, but 4.4mm
wider than the MA2s. These could also probably be used with your old
    spokes.

I don't know if either of these is available in the UK.

I've been using Rigida Chrinas on my Galaxy. Reasonably priced and
very tough, they make an excellent substitute for the MA2. I've done a
super randonneur series, Paris-Brest-Paris and a year's commuting on a
pair and had no trouble with them at all.

Spa Cycles have got them at £18 each. <http://www.spacycles.co.uk/

    Thanks,

I have a 319 laced to a front hub and have had no bother with it on two
fully laden camping LEJOGS, a camping Channel to Med ride several 2-3 day
tours and lots of Audax rides. Only one minor retruing has been needed.
I'm assuming that your wife is far less porky than me and will not give her
front wheel as big a battering as I give mine.

My 319 rimmed rear wheel however gave up the ghost nr Dijon last year when
one of the spokes pulled through the rim. I'm currently making do with a
Decathlon own brand wheel (£25!) which held up for the remainder of the tour
and is currently ensuring that the 719 rimmed replacement is saved for
    later.

I'm a big fan of the Velocity Dyad. I have Schwalbe 32mm and and
Schwalbe 28mm If you're interested I might be able to get a link to
the site where they will build the front wheel to your specs., but I
don't think you can get just the rim.

Velocity make nice rims, the Razor would be a good MA2 replacement, the
only problem is finding someone who has them in stock.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'll go with the OpenPro I think.
I'll get a complete wheel for now, but if I find the hub is sound once
I've stripped it I might get another rim and have a go at building a
    wheel for myself.

If the hub is okay there's no reason not to re-rim with the current
spokes. The guru of bicycle wheels, Jobst Brandt, has re-rimmed some
of his wheels multiple times using the old spokes. You can probably
find his comments on the subject with a bit of google groups searching
    in rec.bicycles.tech.

Of course this preassumes the replacement rim is close in ERD to the
MA2. I've re-rimmed one set of wheels with rims that were 5mm larger
in ERD. I've been riding on those wheels for at least eight years now.
    YMMV

Okay...after typing the above I decided to check on the ERDs of the
    MA2 and the Open Pro.

    MA2 = 613mm
    Open Pro SUP = 607mm

A look at the Open Pro's rim profile shows the nipple seat is quite
deeply pocketed in the grommet/eyelet. You might be able to get away
with using your current spokes even if the spoke end protrudes a bit
    from the nipple.

Thanks for the tip. My first priority is to buy a new wheel so that my
wife has a bike to ride. 🙂
The wheel-building exercise can then be conducted at my leisure.
I guess I should try to remove the old rim non-destructively and try
    to re-use the old spokes
when I get around to rebuilding the wheel.

You can get away with some protrusion - but be careful it's not too much as
even good rim tape dips down into the holes a bit. Also you don't want the
spokes to run out of thread.

I wouldn't bother trying unless the spokes are already a bit short for the
MA2 - ie. not up to the top of the nipples.

The spokes may bottom on the nipples where the thread ends before they are
suitably tensioned. That was the problem when I tried a similar rim change. I
    ended up with new spokes.

Actually it's possible to force unthreaded section of spoke through the
nipple by continuing to tighten. Of course this is a Bad Idea. Feel for
excessive friction and listen for squeaking.

I don't sound like I've been there and done that, do I? ;-)

My commuter has open pro rims and apart from them wearing badly when I
had shimano brake blocks I'be been very happy with them. They certainly
    work with 25mm tyres.
