First off, of course I should know better. But the caonsequences were mild and I take the following
as a learning experience.
For many years I've used a couple of layers of fiberglass strapping tape if a real rim strip was not
handy. Until today, I've never had a problem. Today this could have had catastrophic consequences;
but I got lucky.
I was on my road bike, descending from the summit parking lot on Mt. Ascutney,Vermont. This is 3.7
miles averaging 12%. As I was passing a pickup truck about halfway down, BANG, there goes my front
tire. Fortunately I was on a straight section and not going faster than 15 mph (the truck's driver
had kindly slowed to let me pass), and stopped without falling. If I'd been going faster or was on a
switchback turn the results probably would have been very different.
Inspection of the inner tube revealed a small star-shaped puncture circumscribed by an
imprint of the spoke-hole. On the rim, the fiberglass tape was completely missing over the
spoke hole corresponding to the puncture. The failure was a combination of lateral
displavement of the fiberglass strands, severing of the strands on the edge of the spoke
hole, and melting (?) of the tape.
The tires were 700x25 Avocets, wire bead, running at 90 psi. I think that the failure was due to
heat generated by braking. This led to softening of the tape and/or higher tube pressure, resulting
in rim strip failure.
I repaired the hole with a Park "instant patch", descended with great caution, and within a mile a
second failure occurred. I repatched with two more instant patches, one shoved into the spoke hole,
and rode the remaining 27 miles home without incident.
From here on out, I simply will not ride wheels without proper rim strips.
