    I am curious how well this would work. Probably better than the
    hammer and crescent wrench I used years ago in college. I don't even
    understand how it works.

    I think the chances that Carl will buy this outrageously Industrial
    Revolution-looking tool are rather high.

    The mechanism seems to be that the two curvy bits are the form, and the
    bent part of the rim goes under the rust-colored hook. Turn the threads,
    and the hook pulls the in-dented rim back into the same curve as the
    rest of the rim. The "slot" described seems to be in the head of the
    hook, so that's what prevents the dented part from skating left or right
    in the tool when you start putting the screw to it.

    My suspicion is that it will work best with one size of rim (the form
    has to have the right curvature for the rim circumference) and probably
    works well on steel, and maybe is a lot more iffy on aluminum.
    Nonetheless, I lust after this ridiculously neat tool. As soon as I
    finally acquire my long-dreamed-of set of frame facing/chasing tools, I
    will pursue a rim-straightener.

    Alas, they don't work too well on modern aluminum rims, which dislike
    being bent in that direction, sort of like derailleur hangers, where
    steel is real, but bending aluminum is a bad idea.

    It's not for a typical brake-shoe-grabbing rim dent.

    The "Overland RimTrue" tool is to make an egg-shaped rim round once
    more. Not useful with hollow-section rims (it will merely dent the
    inside surface) but can be effective with single wall rims where the
    deformed area is unkinked.

    For the other kind of deformity, I have one of the old Bicycle
    Research pliers that is almost but not quite better than using other
    tools in a more creative manner. (It's often faster, but seldom
    better.) Of course, the real trick when a rim has such a deformity is
    in checking to make sure that the reason for the bump isn't that the
    flange is getting ready to separate from the rest of the rim. IMLE.
    it's about 60/40, with the slightly greater percentage being those
    that are just bent due to misadventure.

    I'd be concerned about the same - rebending aluminum alloy is
    generally frowned upon.

    We used to use those devices on steel rims. Depending on the
    particulars of the bend, it did work on occasion.

    Actually, I don't have a crown race remover, and occasionally feel the
    need. The alternatives to one are all pretty poor.

    I do have a head tube race remover, which may have saved me more time
    and trouble versus improvising with the wrong tools than anything else I
    own. I also have a nice bearing race installer, too.

    particulars of the bend, it did work on occasion.

    I've rigged something similar to unkink the factory flat spot on some
    particularly egregious cheap-bike wheels. It used to be common for
    BSOs to come with them that way; lately, not so much. (OTOH, the most
    revoltingly soft-and-easy-to-damage rims I have encountered in a long
    time were on a VoldeMart BSO that one of the neighborhood folks
    dredged up recently. Seldom have I seen a wheel so far out of true,
    and never previously have I been able to unkink a rim with just my
    hands and a spoke wrench. Loosen spokes, support rim on two blocks,
    push down; no hammer required. I do not have Chalo's mass to work
    with, either.)

    True, but those types and grades of aluminum are not suitable for
    building strong bicycle rims at a reasonable weight.

    We used to fix old steel rims side to side like that: loosen spokes,
    place knee strategically at center of bend, pull sides to scientific
    alignment point.

    Brought them back in enough for kids to ride the bikes again.
