Interesting question. I've also noticed the same effect on some roads if I ride where the cars tires
have worn the asphalt smooth. I tend to ride there but don't often bother to take a speedometer.

Of course you know paint is slippery when wet and isn't the best place to be riding if you might
have to stop in a hurry.

I used to go skydiving in Casa Grande Arizona. Whenever the locals jumpers saw a cloud, which was
only once or twice while I was there, they would immediately organize a load and skydive through it.

Try it in the rain and let us know the advantages you find. Because they are so slippery when wet, I
make it a practice to avoid the lines whenever possible.

Duh! I prefer to just avoid riding in the rain. And that's easy to do here in the desert.

I ride on a white shoulder line... up and incline... about 10 mph or so. It's at the end of my 20-26
mile ride to my house. It sure seems like it's a lot easier... especially the last 1/2 mile.

I wouldn't do it down hill or on the level for a second... especially in the rain.

I've tried this and coasted downhill on a long uniform grade next to a rider who is about the same
speed coasting. I alternated between a smooth lay-up stripe (not paint), smooth pavement, and
chip-seal (rough) while he stayed on the smoother traffic lane. I was faster on the smooth stripe
and slower on the rough chip-seal.

If you consider what rolling resistance is, this should be self evident. RR is nearly all losses in
the elastomers in the casing, the tube and finally the tread that both flexes and squirms as the
roughness of the road makes indentations in the tread. This is what makes knobby tires roll so
poorly. They have a large tread squirm even on a completely smooth surface as their knobs bulge
under load.

Hey, I actually had to ride in the rain FOUR TIMES in the last couple weeks (over a two day period).
Very strange - probably more "rain riding" than I'd done here in the last two years.

... not that it's "really rain"... just a light drizzle really. Not enough to clean the road, but
enough to cause all the grip to ride the front tire up where it can launch off into space and hang
in mid-air long enough for me to ride through it. Pffttt!

I think it is a smoother ride on the line, just be careful about those careless drivers!! i find it
hard to trade at least a foot or two of safety for a little more speed--that is when i am not

I'm in the Chihuahuan desert and had the rare privelege of riding in the rain this weekend. Fun, but
the puddles everywhere show just how bad the road engineers are in this city.

In some places they use a sort of rubberized strip instead of paint. Even smoother, and also
slick when wet.

Definitely faster.

A bit touchy, aren't you? You asked about riding on the lines, and people tell you that in the rain
those can be very slippery. No-one is lecturing about riding in the rain per se.
