Too damn cold and snowy up here to ride the trails in winter and they
use too much salt and sand for me to subject the bike to on the roads.
Basically I mope and hit the gym in the winter up here.

You're down here in the south...it's pretty much riding season year round.

Winter? In Tennessee? Right. ;-) I ride year round. I put on huge
tires, and run them at 12psi in the winter, to stay on top of the snow.

Yes and only rain or deep snow can stop me. Layer is the
answer been doing it for 10 winters now. The landscape is bland and not
sole in sight. Summer sucks ,fall is better. Winter is sometime bitter
sweet and spring is neat.

Heat and humidity you can't take off enough to stay
cool. Cold you can allways put more on to stay warm or just pedal
harder.

Nice pictures. You're right, we don't get much of that in Tennessee.

Winter? In Tennessee? Right. ;-) I ride year round. I put on huge

The problem is perspiration though.

If it's hot and you sweat; it's no sweat. Sweating in the cold is not so
pleasant.

I'm mostly a road rider in the Summer, but switch to MTB night
rides so I can keep busy all year. I ride mostly with a group
in Greenfield, MA that goes out 2-3 times per week all season
long. We ride in pretty much anything except freezing rain.

We've had cold spells where we were riding in below 0F temps
for weeks at a time. Our 'record' was -10F below, with
windchills down to -40F (this got us an article and photos in
TWO local newspapers).

The only trail conditions that aren't ridable are deep fresh
powder, or 'sloppy' slush in the Spring. Other than that, once
the snowmobiles hit the trails and pack them a bit it is just
like riding on pavement.

If anybody wants to join us, we'd love to show you the area...
Just bring your bike an a set of lights. We'll provide the
snow, the cold, and a good local beer (or three) after the
ride.

Yes, I ride all summer and all winter unless it's under 68 degrees, or if
there is a cloud in the sky, or if it's rained within the last month, or if
the wind is blowing more than 3mph, then I stay home.

late October or early November. We have learned to avoid riding when it has
recently rained and the temperature is heading below freezing. Rim brakes +

Riding black ice on a deep lake is always exciting. Even when there's

Yeah, I ski if it's anything better than sucky. Mediocre skiing beats
winter riding the majority of the time for me.
Last year was so snowy, the skiing was almost always good and the
cycling was almost always bad. Makes it a pretty easy decision.
Also, below zero F is only good for powder skiing IMO. I can't keep the
extremities warm on the bike, especially if it's really cold like the
-20 to -40 spells we usually get for a week or two every winter.
When it's super cold like that I just stay in. I have a spot that always
freezes on my nose if I go out when it's that cold. If I keep doing it,
that part of my nose will likely fall off one day.

I saw some of the skiing pics you posted. Out here we'd pay a premium to get
a piece of your mediocre skiing. Actually I'd take a helping of your

68 degrees and below is a great time to ride light or
dark.

We ride year round in Memphis. Winter here is around 40 degrees!!!!
Just a lot of rain duning the off summer months.......
