Having a long weekend near Louth soon, with a mixed ability group. Any
suggestions for rides around 40 miles, with a good pub stop? Any good tea
shops/bacon sandwich stops?
Thanks.

40 miles seems a bit ambitious for a "mixed ability" group. I
remember the first time I did a 20 mile cycle took me four hours (lot of
camera stops) and I didn't want to cycle anymore that day( maybe by the
next day they are ready for another 20 miles) but do not overestimate
what a beginner will find comfortable/enjoyable.
You should ask yourself how mixed is the mixed ability group and go
at the slowest's pace else it becomes a trial for them and puts them off
cycling for life.
Mind you 40 miles spread over three days (just noticed you said long
weekend) is probably well within the capabilities of all but the lardiest

They're not beginners. They're experienced cyclists who can't go as far as
they used to. They're good for 40 miles per day, given a tea stop at 11, and
a lunch stop at 1. Wind 'em up & point 'em in the right direction. A couple
of us are actually under 60, and we will attempt a longer ride on the
Sunday, leaving the 85 year olds to their own devices.

Can't suggest a full route as I'm normally coming into the Wolds from the
south side but Bluestone Heath road is a cracking one to cycle and I'm sure
you can easily work that into a good route from Louth. There's also a nice
pub in Belchford called the Blue Bell.

Thanks. I think I'd have to visit somewhere called "Belchford" anyway!

Whilst on the subject, I'll be staying in Washingborough (just SE of
Lincoln and on the flat bit) over Easter. I'll be taking my MTB with me.
Um, any good off-road trails in that neck-o'the-woods? I'm not
expecting mountains :-)

The garden centre cafe at Ludford is a favourite stop during Lincoln audaxes. Recommended.

Didn't mean to denigrate anyone, must just be that you and I have a
different idea what "mixed ability" means. I had this image of people
built like racing snakes on £4000 road bikes along with 20 stone
teenagers on "Sterling house" specials.
Hope I am still cycling at 85, scratch that I hope I am still
breathing at 85. :-)
