  1. Rode my first century (108 miles actually) of 2004
today. I headed out of London up to Ugley/Quendon to
    marshal an Open 25.

Walked in through the door upon returning home, changed out
of the cycling stuff while the kettle boiled, came
downstairs to make some coffee, sat in the armchair an fell
straight to sleep. Woke up 1 hour later when the phone rang,
full cup of cold coffee on the table still!

I left the house at 5.30am this morning to be at my
marshalling point by 8am. Good tailwind on the way out, but
a bugger of a headwind all the way home. I've just showered
and put the dinner on, nice relaxing evening in front of the
    box for me!

    Thanks for listening.

Did exactly the same thing in the bath after my 200k Audax
    last Sunday.

Well done. Me and long distances don't really go together
but I'm slowly getting there. I've got 29 miles to add to my
lowly record to crack the century. I might try and "cheat"
one day by doing it all in one direction with a strong tail
wind and get a lift back.

What was your average speed (excluding stops)? I bet it was
    something outrageous!

Well done, a well deserved snooze. Foul weather up here in
Yorkshire so I didn't venture out. I hope the week is
better, now that I have tonnes of time ! Still not ready fro
    100 miles ATM though.

What sort of excuse is that :-)

I went out and clocked up 33 miles with my son on a loop
through Meanwood, Collingham, Harewood, Pool, Otley,
Bramhope and back to meanwood via Headingley. It only got
really foul around 3:30 and my son needed a feeding stop in
a cafe at Otley before the final leg home. I'm most
impressed with the performance of the Aldi cycling tops and
jackets. They certainly kept me dry and warm. I'm not ready
for a century yet though...might give it a go in the Easter
break....it's nearly thirty years ago since I did
one...gulp...where did all that time go?.........

    According to my Polar download:

Avg speed was 17.9mph (it felt a lot faster...blasted wind!)
Max Speed was 38.3mph Avg Cadence was 81 Max Cadence was 108
Avg HR was 142 Max HR was 173

I'm racing next Sunday, fingers crossed the numbers should
    be higher!

You should aim for 100 miles in 6 hours Vernon. Doable yet
resonably respectable. That circuit you describe is one of
my favourites, I go out via Rothwell and Garforth. Its a 50
miler for me. I usually don't stop at cafes though.

I did a reccy of a part of the TPT last Wednesday, only
20 miles but reasonably interesting on the Eastern side
of Wakefield, hopefully I'll get a little further
    during the week.

  9. I did my first century of the season last week

Was quite a flat one went from Sheffield through bawtry,Gainsborogh and to Market rason quite flat which I found fairly easy as I am used to (and prefer) riding the hills of the Peak district.

Not very fast though only managed about 12.5mph but this was not helprd by the fact I had THREE punctures,I have never had more tham one on a journey before 🙁

I really panicked cause I had my first puncture at the 50 mile point and realised the bike shop had sold me the wrong size of inertubes and I did not have a repir kit on me,lesson learned there, anyway somehow i managed to get them to fit.

The 3rd puncture happened about 5 miles from home and I had to limp my hybrid home with a flat not recommended.

Anyway still managed to make the local for last orders 🙂

    though.

When I shed some more weight than I'll attempt that sort of
pace over 100 miles. At the moment at 21 stone I can only
sustain it for around 20 miles on my Galaxy though I can
wipe the floor with my lithe and unfit son who is finally
making the connection between regular exercise and fitness.
The cafe stop was solely for his benefit as he bonked on
    todays ride.

I'm pretty proud of the progress that I've made in the past
year. This time last year I could barely walk to the end of
the street without taking two or three breathers. Still
awaiting a definitive diagnosis as to what has been wrong
apart from being lardy! The health professionals are most
    impressed with my progress.

I've been looking at the maps and trying to visualise the
environment through which it passes. I intend to ride it
before the summer holidays, hopefully complete it in a
    couple of days.

The Manchester 100 is a good target, in September you should
be fit, easy course and lots of groups to ride in. I've done
it on three occasions in the last 10 years.

Good on you sir, cycling can be hard enough without being
competetive against other riders yet still strangely
    rewarding.

I am particularly in the Leeds to Sheffield/Chesterfield
parts, I joined the TPT at Stanley and went towards the Aire
& Calder Navigation on a dirt path, (road alternative
required here), then south along the western toepath. It
suddenly stopped being a 6 feet wide tarmac path to a 1 foot
wide stone flagged path with the canal on one side and a
stone wall on the other. No passing place, highly dodgy when
wet I would imagine. Need to find an alternative here too !

I've done the Aire & Calder Navigation from Woddlesford into
Leeds. It's a decently wide tow path apart from a need to
climb up a substantial flight of stairs to cross the canal
using a road bridge near Knowsthorp (Knostrop?) Thepath is
nice and wide and popular with walkers and cyclists alike.

I used to do that. Put my bike on a train and ride back in

Not really cheating, you WILL complete the ride if its one
way, there is NO chance you can cut it short. Do what Simon
says, get a train to a place 100 miles away and ride home.
At Easter I am going to get a train to Carlisle and ride
home in two days, then hopefully on the May bank holiday do
    it in one go.

A 100 mile ride held in September, starting and finishing in
Wythenshawe Park. Free parking, easy course, quiet roads,
    well marshalled, good turn out.

It's the same for me too (well, it's not /that/ close but
    compared to 100 miles...🙂

Just wandering, with youth on my side, would 100 miles be
    do-able without any training?
