  1. Yesterday, Perth, my wife and I packed the panniers, attached the trailer to
the trike, and set off to Toodyay. Only 80km, so not really a hard
    one....but we were so wrong!

It is something that, from a car, you do not fully appreciate the number of
hills you need to rise 400m over 80km. Or rather, once you've climbed the
400m how many additional ups and downs our pioneer road builders thought fit
to include. And you don't fully realise how long and steep Red Hill is, or
how after climbing hill after hill the additional load of panniers and
trailer etc is really quite a burden. Anyway, we made it and there was a
sense of achievement to be had. Our first major (overnight) trike outing.

Highlights were the number of cars, motorcycles and trucks that had a
freindly wave or toot. Maybe 1/3 or more, and hitting 53kph down hill whilst
hard on the brakes, and of course averaging 17.18kph over the ride there.
Lowlights were the dead animals reeking in the middle of long ascents (never
on descents of course), the hills, the temperature well into the 30s. Things
we did better this time included mounting our UHF handhelds on the back of
the trike seats, and using a remote speaker/mic clipped onto our jersey
fronts, and taking a 10L plastic jerrycan of water which we'd finished by
the time we got to Toodyay.

    Cheers

  2. Far out.
Do you have a pic of your rig? A 3 wheeler?

Cycling certainly does bring a new outlook onto travelling compared to driving about in cars.

yeah, 2 Greetspeed GT5 trikes, one with panniers and one with a single wheel
trailer. Both on UHF35. And believe me, it feels much safer being passed by
trucks on a trike than on a 2 wheeler!

It does indeed. Somehow you have to drive 300km to have a holiday, but in an
80km ride you see plenty of potential little holiday spots, not too far from
    home.

    Top effort Dave!
Having driven up that way many times for Avon Descent training I was
always amazed at how those hils seem to go up and up and up and up! Did
you ride back as well or did someone pick you up?

heh...I've been up in the valley a fair bit for the Avon as well, and knew
it was hilly. Just not *that* hilly! I guess when you're primarily following
    the rail access road...

We had the ride back planned, and that woulda been easier than the ride up,
but someone had sore legs and it was getting pretty hot on Sunday so her
folks came and picked us up. Ever seen two trikes, a trailer and camping
gear in the back of a Camry sedan (with 4 passengers also)? I can now attest
    that it *is* possible! (just...)

When the weather cools off a bit we'll do the up-and-back just to get
    "closure".

    Cheers

Hehe, that damned first hill heading from Toodyay to Perth nearly bloody
    killed me once.

Would that have been due to the fact that it's so damn steep, too long to
ride without a rest, the lanes are narrow and winding, the speed limit is
110kph, the traffic is mainly semi-trailers and Cleanaway trucks, and there
are no shoulders at all but a 30cm high barrier kerb against the face of a
    rock cutting?

Still, glad I did it on 3 wheels. 2 wheels would have been a bit much, even
    for me.

    Cheers

All of the above but mostly that it is about 4kms from the start to the top
of the hill with no rest on the way other than getting off the bike. I was
with my son, we were doing a Perth, York, Northam - Northam, Toodyay, Perth
    weekend.
